The nuclear energy area is a complex domain involving a large number of disciplines, concepts and relations. Despite its long tradition in organizing, processing and dissemination of information, reflected in important databases and international information systems, in recent decades this field has not evolved satisfactorily regarding the development of tools to standardize terminology and, consequently, concerning the extension of the theoretical and methodological framework for conceptual modeling. This fact creates an obstacle in the development of more sophisticated information systems. Starting from the systematization of ontic conceptual relations in the domain of the nuclear area, this paper presents a new way to conceptual modeling, anchored in the theoretical basis of information science. The proposed model, based on a classification principles, seeks to combine categorical and formal relations, to reaching the triadic model of relations for the nuclear area. Resumo. A area de Energia Nuclear e um dominio complexo que envolve um grande numero de disciplinas, conceitos e relacoes. Apesar da sua longa tradicao na organizacao, no tratamento e na disseminacao de informacao, refletido em importantes bases de dados e sistemas internacionais de informacao, nas ultimas decadas nao evoluiu a contento no que diz respeito a elaboracao de instrumentos de padronizacao terminologica e, consequentemente, no que diz respeito a ampliacao de arcabouco teoricometodologico para modelagem conceitual. Esse fato cria um obstaculo no desenvolvimento de sistemas de informacao mais sofisticados. Partindo da sistematizacao das relacoes conceituais onticas existentes no dominio da area nuclear, o presente trabalho visa apresentar um novo caminho para a modelagem conceitual, ancorado na base teorica da Ciencia da Informacao. A modelagem proposta, baseada em principios classificatorios, procura combinar relacoes categoriais e formais, chegando ao modelo triadico de relacoes para a area de ciencias nucleares.

Prolegomena to Library Classification

Modelagem de Relações Conceituais para a Área Nuclear.

Since the introduction of patterns in Computer Science, a large number of libraries of patterns for different domains have been identified. In most cases these patterns are represented in a ‘flat’ fashion making their use difficult especially when there is a large number of patterns to consider in a particular application. In this paper we propose an analysis pattern retrieval (APR) approach under a classification schema in order to enable the automatic re-use of analysis patterns. The proposed classification scheme associates a problem to a set of pre-defined terms whereas the retrieval approach based on a Boolean model provides the necessary support to help a designer to locate and select analysis patterns that better solve the conceptual problem that he has in hands. An APR approach under a classification schema has the potential to make large analysis patterns collections easier to use and understand.

Towards an Effective Analysis Pattern Retrieval

Currently, faceted classification goes into the realm of the Internet “information retrieval” and it is more accepted as a tool outside the realm of the library and information science. Unfortunately, IT people have adopted the faceted classification without a methodologically full understanding of faceted classification. There is not much theoretical discussion about the possibility on the Internet environments based on its library original. In this paper, I will discuss the potential usage of faceted classification for “information retrieval” from a fundamental problem of relation of classification and searching/retrieval in an organic “information retrieval” system, which has much influence with changing from the library environments to the Internet environments. This change gives chances and challenges to faceted classification. With this change of environments, I want to argue that faceted classification keeps the merits of classification in information retrieval comparing with search engines and overcomes the problems with a traditional enumerative classification structure by providing for the flexible combination of terms to represent a specific complex/compound subject. Especially I want to argue that expressiveness of notation in faceted classification, which has been thought of as a defect until now, can find new usage as a potential switching/connection to multilingual information and a significant aiding in browse searching/retrieval and keyword searching/retrieval.

Potential Usage of Faceted Classification in Internet “Information Retrieval”

Chapter 2 closed with a list of the desired attributes of knowledge organization systems (KOSs) for interdisciplinarity. This chapter opens with a brief survey of KOSs, and then asks what sort of KOS could provide these desired attributes. In particular, it provides arguments for the theses that:

The development of domain ontological models, though being a mature research arena backed by well-established methodologies, still suffer from two key shortcomings. Firstly, the issues concerning the semantic persistency of ontology concepts and their flexible reuse in domain development employing existing approaches. Secondly, due to the difficulty in understanding and reusing top-level concepts in existing foundational ontologies, the obfuscation regarding the semantic nature of domain representations. The paper grounds the aforementioned shortcomings in representation diversity and proposes a three-fold solution - (i) a pipeline for rendering concepts reuse-ready, (ii) a first characterization of a minimalistic foundational knowledge model, named foundational teleology, semantically explicating foundational distinctions enforcing the static as well as dynamic nature of domain representations, and (iii) a flexible, reuse-native methodology for diversity-aware domain development exploiting solutions (i) and (ii). The preliminary work reported validates the potentiality of the solution components.
