Abstract
This book presents a comprehensive review of the subject of gravitational effects in quantum field theory. Although the treatment is general, special emphasis is given to the Hawking black hole evaporation effect, and to particle creation processes in the early universe. The last decade has witnessed a phenomenal growth in this subject. This is the first attempt to collect and unify the vast literature that has contributed to this development. All the major technical results are presented, and the theory is developed carefully from first principles. Here is everything that students or researchers will need to embark upon calculations involving quantum effects of gravity at the so-called one-loop approximation level.

Quantum cosmology and open universes

TL;DR: In this paper, the quantum creation of universes with compact spacelike sections that have curvature k either closed, flat, or open, i.e., $k=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1,0,$ is studied.

One-loop corrected thermodynamics of the extremal and nonextremal spinning Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black hole

TL;DR: In this article, the authors consider the one-loop corrected geometry and thermodynamics of a rotating BTZ black hole by way of a dimensionally reduced dilaton model, and show that only the latter method yields regularity and consistency at the 1-loop level.

The Universe of General Relativity

TL;DR: In this paper, Renn and Rynasiewicz discuss the importance of general Relativistic Cosmology in the development of Inflation in the early 20th century, and present their theory of General Relativity as a challenge to 19th century Optics of Moving Bodies.
Journal ArticleDOI

Cosmological significance of one-loop effective gravity

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of the universal non-local terms in a toy model was investigated and it was shown that they can play an important role in the very early universe, leading to deviations from the standard inflationary expansion.

Renormalization Group and Decoupling in Curved Space: II. The Standard Model and Beyond

TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied the renormalization group and decoupling of massive fields in curved space, and analyzed the higher derivative sector of the vacuum metric-dependent action of the Standard Model.

Particle Creation by Black Holes

TL;DR: In this article, it is shown that quantum mechanical effects cause black holes to create and emit particles as if they were hot bodies with temperature, which leads to a slow decrease in the mass of the black hole and to its eventual disappearance.

Foundations of the Theory of Dynamical Systems of Infinitely Many Degrees of Freedom, II

TL;DR: The notion of quantum field remains at this time still rather elusive from a rigorous standpoint as mentioned in this paper, and it was recognized very early by Bohr and Rosenfeld that even in the case of a free field, no physical meaning could be attached to the values of the field at a particular point, only the suitably smoothed averages over finite space-time regions had such a meaning.

Evidence for the existence of gravitational radiation from measurements of the binary pulsar psr 1913+16

TL;DR: The results of four years of timing observations of PSR 1913+16 made with the 305m telescope at the Arecibo Observatory at frequencies near 430 and 1410 MHz are summarized in this paper.
