General population data from the National Comorbidity Survey are presented on co-occurring DSM-III-R addictive and mental disorders. Co-occurrence is highly prevalent in the general population and usually due to the association of a primary mental disorder with a secondary addictive disorder. It is associated with a significantly increased probability of treatment, although the finding that fewer than half of cases with 12-month co-occurrence received any treatment in the year prior to interview suggests the need for greater outreach efforts.read more

Treating Depression and Substance Use: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Sarah B. Hunter,Katherine E. Watkins,Kimberly A. Hepner,Susan M. Paddock,Brett Ewing,Karen Chan Osilla,Suzanne Perry +6 more
TL;DR: Both depressive symptoms and substance use were reduced by the intervention but were not significantly different from the control group, suggesting that further research is warranted to enhance the effectiveness of treatment for co-occurring disorders in these settings.

Characterizing the longitudinal patterns of substance use among individuals diagnosed with serious mental illness after psychiatric hospitalization.
TL;DR: Substance use is frequent and associated with poor recovery in patients with serious mental illness recently discharged from psychiatric hospitalization, and addiction treatments personalized by diagnosis and gender may be effective for improving outcomes in people withserious mental illness.

Perceived alcohol stigma: factor structure and construct validation.
TL;DR: The alcohol-adapted PDD appears to be a psychometrically sound measure and exhibits relationships that are consistent with modified labeling theory and a 1-factor solution of PAS had superior parsimony.

TL;DR: The prevalence of psychiatric disorders is greater than previously thought to be the case, and morbidity is more highly concentrated than previously recognized in roughly one sixth of the population who have a history of three or more comorbid disorders.

Posttraumatic stress disorder in the National Comorbidity Survey.
TL;DR: Progress in estimating age-at-onset distributions, cohort effects, and the conditional probabilities of PTSD from different types of trauma will require future epidemiologic studies to assess PTSD for all lifetime traumas rather than for only a small number of retrospectively reported "most serious" traumAs.
