TLDR
A meta-analysis of all studies assessing risk of prevalence and incidence of diabetes found a high risk of diabetes incidence for cadmium exposure, which was higher for studies using urine as exposure assessment.About:

Associations of cumulative exposure to heavy metal mixtures with obesity and its comorbidities among U.S. adults in NHANES 2003-2014.
TL;DR: This study suggests that cumulative exposure to heavy metals as mixtures is associated with obesity and its related chronic conditions such as hypertension and T2DM.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cadmium and atherosclerosis: A review of toxicological mechanisms and a meta-analysis of epidemiologic studies.
Alexey A. Tinkov,Alexey A. Tinkov,Alexey A. Tinkov,Tommaso Filippini,Olga P. Ajsuvakova,Margarita G. Skalnaya,Jan Aaseth,Geir Bjørklund,Eugenia R. Gatiatulina,Elizaveta V. Popova,Olga N. Nemereshina,Pai Tsang Huang,Marco Vinceti,Anatoly V. Skalny +13 more
TL;DR: The mechanisms of atherogenic effect of cadmium may involve oxidative stress, inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, enhanced lipid synthesis, up‐regulation of adhesion molecules, prostanoid dysbalance, as well as altered glycosaminoglycan synthesis.

Gut as a target for cadmium toxicity
Alexey A. Tinkov,Alexey A. Tinkov,Alexey A. Tinkov,Viktor A. Gritsenko,Margarita G. Skalnaya,Sergey V. Cherkasov,Jan Aaseth,Anatoly V. Skalny +7 more
TL;DR: The efficiency of probiotics in at least partial prevention of the local (intestinal) and systemic toxic effects of cadmium confirms the role of altered gut physiology in Cd toxicity, and probiotic treatment may be considered as the one of the strategies for prevention of Cdoxicity in parallel with chelation, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory therapy.
Journal ArticleDOI
Dietary intake of cadmium, chromium, copper, manganese, selenium and zinc in a Northern Italy community.
Tommaso Filippini,Silvia Cilloni,Marcella Malavolti,Federica Violi,Carlotta Malagoli,Marina Tesauro,Ilaria Bottecchi,Angela Ferrari,Luciano Vescovi,Marco Vinceti +9 more
TL;DR: The present estimated intake data can be used to examine a specific trace element of interest and would afford enhanced health protection from those trace elements characterized by both nutritional and toxicological effects.

Obesity is associated with macrophage accumulation in adipose tissue
Stuart P. Weisberg,Daniel McCann,Manisha Desai,Michael Rosenbaum,Rudolph L. Leibel,Anthony W. Ferrante +5 more
TL;DR: Transcript expression in perigonadal adipose tissue from groups of mice in which adiposity varied due to sex, diet, and the obesity-related mutations agouti (Ay) and obese (Lepob) found that the expression of 1,304 transcripts correlated significantly with body mass.
Journal ArticleDOI
The metabolic syndrome
TL;DR: The pathophysiology seems to be largely attributable to insulin resistance with excessive flux of fatty acids implicated, and a proinflammatory state probably contributes to the metabolic syndrome.

TL;DR: It is concluded that the LPS/CD14 system sets the tone of insulin sensitivity and the onset of diabetes and obesity and lowering plasma LPS concentration could be a potent strategy for the control of metabolic diseases.

Increased oxidative stress in obesity and its impact on metabolic syndrome
Shigetada Furukawa,Takuya Fujita,Michio Shimabukuro,Masanori Iwaki,Yukio Yamada,Yoshimitsu Nakajima,Osamu Nakayama,Makoto Makishima,Morihiro Matsuda,Iichiro Shimomura +9 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that increased oxidative stress in accumulated fat is an early instigator of metabolic syndrome and that the redox state in adipose tissue is a potentially useful therapeutic target for obesity-associated metabolic syndrome.

Economic costs of diabetes in the US in 2002.
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors estimated the direct medical and indirect productivity-related costs attributable to diabetes and calculated and compared the total and per capita medical expenditures for people with and without diabetes.
