Journal ArticleDOI
How strong is the evidence for use of beta-blockers as first-line therapy for hypertension? Systematic review and meta-analysis.
TL;DR: Beta-blockers are inferior to CCBs and to RAS inhibitors for reducing several important hard end points and are generally suboptimal first-line antihypertensive drugs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Diastolic heart failure in the community: Clinical profile, natural history, therapy, and impact of proposed diagnostic criteria
Horng H. Chen,John G. Lainchbury,John G. Lainchbury,Michele Senni,Michele Senni,Kent R. Bailey,Kent R. Bailey,Margaret M. Redfield,Margaret M. Redfield +8 more
TL;DR: This population-based study provides a comprehensive clinical profile, current management, prognosis, and predictors of outcome of patients with new onset CHF who had normal ejection fraction in Olmsted County, Minnesota during 1996-1997.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hypertensive left ventricular hypertrophy: relation to peripheral sympathetic drive
TL;DR: Results indicate that, in subjects with moderate to severe hypertension, the presence of LVH is associated with higher sympathetic discharge, evidenced by an increase in unitary firing frequency and also by fiber recruitment.
Journal ArticleDOI
The burden of chronic kidney disease in renal transplant recipients.
TL;DR: CKD and the complications of CKD are highly prevalent in renal transplant recipients and the classification of renal transplant patients by CKD stage may help clinicians identify patients at increased risk and target appropriate therapy to improve outcomes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Differential Impact of Systolic and Diastolic Blood Pressure Level on JNC-VI Staging
Donald M. Lloyd-Jones,Jane C. Evans,Jane C. Evans,Martin G. Larson,Martin G. Larson,Christopher J. O'Donnell,Christopher J. O'Donnell,Daniel Levy,Daniel Levy,Daniel Levy +9 more
TL;DR: In this article, the effect of disparate levels of systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) levels on blood pressure staging and eligibility for therapy was evaluated, and it was shown that SBP alone correctly classified 99% of subjects; in those <60 years old, it alone classified 95%.
