Traffic-related air pollution, particulate matter, and autism.

TLDR
Exposure to traffic-related air pollution, nitrogen dioxide, PM2.5, and PM10 during pregnancy and during the first year of life was associated with autism.

Maternal and Childhood Ambient Air Pollution Exposure and Mental Health Symptoms and Psychomotor Development in Children: An Australian Population-Based Longitudinal Study

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explored the role of multiple exposure periods to ambient particulate matter with diameter of 5.9-7.1 µg/m3 on emotional and behavioural problems and developmental delay in communication and gross motor skills.
Journal ArticleDOI

Antipurinergic Therapy with Suramin as a Treatment for Autism Spectrum Disorder

TL;DR: It was concluded that APT with suramin assists in correcting genetic abnormalities and environmental predispositions that may impact social behavior related to ASD.
Journal ArticleDOI

Development of a high-throughput in vivo screening platform for particulate matter exposures.

TL;DR: This rapid, sensitive and consistently scalable model is a potentially cost-effective vertebrate approach to study the toxicology of PM from diverse locations, and provides a path to identifying the toxic material(s) in these samples, and discover the mechanisms of toxicity.
Journal ArticleDOI

A review of prevalence studies of Autism Spectrum Disorder by latitude and solar irradiance impact.

TL;DR: There is a tendency for the prevalence rates of ASD to be lowest in countries near the equator and for this rate to increase as the latitude increases, which provides some support not just for the Vitamin D hypothesis, but also for a new proposition that along with UVB radiation, the entire solar radiation spectrum which reaches the earth, may play a role in ASD.

Modelling of particulate matter concentrations and source contributions in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area in 2008 and 2010

TL;DR: In this paper, an urban-scale dispersion model for road dust suspension, FORE, was used to predict the long-range transported contributions at the urban traffic stations for PM2.5 and PM10.

Mullen Scales of Early Learning

TL;DR: The Mullen Scales of Early Learning (MSEL) as mentioned in this paper includes five scales that provide information on cognitive and motor ability, including Gross Motor (0-33 months only), Visual Reception, Fine Motor, Expressive Language and Receptive Language.

Ultrafine Particles Cross Cellular Membranes by Nonphagocytic Mechanisms in Lungs and in Cultured Cells

TL;DR: Inhaled ultrafine titanium dioxide particles were found on the luminal side of airways and alveoli, in all major lung tissue compartments and cells, and within capillaries, while particle uptake in vitro did not occur by any of the expected endocytic processes, but rather by diffusion or adhesive interactions.

Prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders: Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network, United States, 2006. Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. Surveillance Summaries. Volume 58, Number SS-10.

TL;DR: The identified prevalence of ASDs in U.S. children aged 8 years was estimated through a systematic retrospective review of evaluation records in multiple sites participating in the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network and presence of an identified ASD was determined through a review of data abstracted from developmental evaluation records by trained clinician reviewers.
Journal ArticleDOI

Air pollution: mechanisms of neuroinflammation and CNS disease

TL;DR: Recent findings detailing the mechanisms through which air pollution reaches the brain and activates the resident innate immune response to become a chronic source of pro-inflammatory factors and ROS, culminating in CNS disease are summarized.
