TL;DR: A conceptual framework and recommendations on the use of microglial nomenclature for researchers, reviewers, and editors are discussed in this article . But, as mentioned before, the proposed framework does not consider the role of functional microglia in development, plasticity, aging, and diseases.

Brain Macrophage Transplantation for Research and Therapy Development
TL;DR: The molecular mechanisms responsible for changes in microglial state are highly implicated in the pathogenesis of many brain diseases, but the molecular mechanism responsible are poorly understood as mentioned in this paper , and there are many barriers to specifically targeting microglia for therapeutic purposes.
