Journal ArticleDOI
Redox metals and oxidative abnormalities in human prion diseases
Robert B. Petersen,Sandra L. Siedlak,Hyoung Gon Lee,Yong-Sun Kim,Akihiko Nunomura,Fabrizio Tagliavini,Bernardino Ghetti,Patrick Cras,Paula I. Moreira,Rudy J. Castellani,Marin Guentchev,Herbert Budka,James W. Ironside,Pierluigi Gambetti,Mark A. Smith,George Perry +15 more
TL;DR: Interestingly, it was found that the pattern of deposition of PrP, amyloid-β, and redox active metals was distinct for the various prion diseases, indicating that different neurodegenerative pathways are involved in differentPrion diseases.
Journal ArticleDOI
A novel phenotype in familial Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease: prion protein gene E200K mutation coupled with valine at codon 129 and type 2 protease-resistant prion protein.
Johannes A. Hainfellner,Piero Parchi,Tetsuyuki Kitamoto,Christa Jarius,Pierluigi Gambetti,Herbert Budka +5 more
TL;DR: This observation further underlines the role of codon 129 on the mutated PRNP allele in modulating the phenotype of familial prion diseases.
Journal ArticleDOI
The need to unify neuropathological assessments of vascular alterations in the ageing brain: Multicentre survey by the BrainNet Europe consortium
Irina Alafuzoff,Ellen Gelpi,Safa Al-Sarraj,Thomas Arzberger,Johannes Attems,Istvan Bodi,Nenad Bogdanovic,Herbert Budka,Orso Bugiani,Elisabet Englund,Isidro Ferrer,Stephen M. Gentleman,Giorgio Giaccone,Manuel B. Graeber,Tibor Hortobágyi,Romana Höftberger,James W. Ironside,Kurt A. Jellinger,Nikolaos Kavantzas,Andrew P. King,Penelope Korkolopoulou,Gabor G. Kovacs,David Meyronet,Camelia M. Monoranu,Piero Parchi,Efstratios Patsouris,Wolfgang Roggendorf,Annemieke J. M. Rozemuller,Danielle Seilhean,Nathalie Streichenberger,Dietmar Rudolf Thal,Stephen B. Wharton,Hans A. Kretzschmar +32 more
TL;DR: A simple strategy regarding assessment of load of alteration is urgently needed to yield reproducible, and at the same time, comparable results between centres, according to BrainNet Europe members.
Journal ArticleDOI
The brain-specific protein TPPP/p25 in pathological protein deposits of neurodegenerative diseases
Gabor G. Kovacs,Ellen Gelpi,Attila Lehotzky,Romana Höftberger,Anna Erdei,Herbert Budka,Judit Ovádi +6 more
TL;DR: Exposition of the segment aa 184–200 of TPPP/p25 in the aggregates of pathological inclusions renders this antibody a reliable marker of all types of α-synucleinopathies and suggests a role for TPPP/(p25) in the aggregation process of some neurodegenerative conditions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Vacuolar myelopathy with multinucleated giant cells in the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Light and electron microscopic distribution of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) antigens.
TL;DR: In this paper, an AIDS patient dying after 14 months of progressive dementia, including 3 months of spinal signs and symptoms, showed moderate diffuse damage of the white matter compatible with HIV-induced progressive diffuse leukoencephalopathy.
