TL;DR: This work used microcrystals of photoactive yellow protein as a model system and obtained high-resolution, time-resolved difference electron density maps of excellent quality with strong features, which open the way to the study of reversible and nonreversible biological reactions on time scales as short as femtoseconds under conditions that maximize the extent of reaction initiation throughout the crystal.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ultrafast X-ray probing of water structure below the homogeneous ice nucleation temperature.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that femtosecond X-ray laser pulses can be used to probe the structure of liquid water in micrometre-sized droplets that have been evaporatively cooled below TH, and experimental evidence is found for the existence of metastable bulk liquid water down to temperatures of kelvin in the previously largely unexplored no man’s land.
Journal ArticleDOI

Spence,Raymond C. Stevens,Vadim Cherezov +33 more
TL;DR: The structure of a human serotonin receptor was solved using a free-electron laser to analyze microcrystals and displays a distinct distribution of thermal motions and conformations of residues that likely more accurately represent the receptor structure and dynamics in a cellular environment.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: This simultaneous XRD-XES study shows that the PS II crystals are intact during measurements at the LCLS, not only with respect to the structure of PS II, but also with regard to the electronic structure of the highly radiation-sensitive Mn4CaO5 cluster, opening new directions for future dynamics studies.
Journal ArticleDOI
