TL;DR: Cigarette smoking has a broad impact on genome-wide methylation that, at many loci, persists many years aftersmoking cessation, indicating a pattern of persistent altered methylation, with attenuation, after smoking cessation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Novel biomarkers for pre-diabetes identified by metabolomics
Rui Wang-Sattler,Zhonghao Yu,Christian Herder,Ana C. Messias,Anna Floegel,Ying He,Katharina Heim,Monica Campillos,Christina Holzapfel,Barbara Thorand,Harald Grallert,Tao Xu,Erik Bader,Cornelia Huth,Kirstin Mittelstrass,Angela Döring,Christa Meisinger,Christian Gieger,Cornelia Prehn,Werner Roemisch-Margl,Maren Carstensen,Lu Xie,Hisami Yamanaka-Okumura,Guihong Xing,Uta Ceglarek,Joachim Thiery,Guido Giani,Heiko Lickert,Xu Lin,Yixue Li,Heiner Boeing,Hans-Georg Joost,Martin Hrabé de Angelis,Wolfgang Rathmann,Karsten Suhre,Karsten Suhre,Holger Prokisch,Annette Peters,Thomas Meitinger,Michael Roden,Michael Roden,H-Erich Wichmann,Tobias Pischon,Jerzy Adamski,Thomas Illig +44 more
TL;DR: Seven T2D‐related genes are identified that are associated with these three IGT‐specific metabolites by multiple interactions with four enzymes, and the expression levels of these enzymes correlate with changes in the metabolite concentrations linked to diabetes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Human serum metabolic profiles are age dependent.
Zhonghao Yu,Guangju Zhai,Guangju Zhai,Paula Singmann,Ying He,Tao Xu,Cornelia Prehn,Werner Römisch-Margl,Eva Lattka,Christian Gieger,Nicole Soranzo,Nicole Soranzo,Joachim Heinrich,Marie Standl,Elisabeth Thiering,Kirstin Mittelstraß,Heinz-Erich Wichmann,Annette Peters,Karsten Suhre,Karsten Suhre,Yixue Li,Jerzy Adamski,Tim D. Spector,Thomas Illig,Rui Wang-Sattler +24 more
TL;DR: The results indicate that metabolic profiles are age dependent and might reflect different aging processes, such as incomplete mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of smoking and smoking cessation on human serum metabolite profile: results from the KORA cohort study
Tao Xu,Christina Holzapfel,Xiao Dong,Erik Bader,Zhonghao Yu,Cornelia Prehn,Katrin Perstorfer,Marta Jaremek,Werner Roemisch-Margl,Wolfgang Rathmann,Yixue Li,H.-Erich Wichmann,Henri Wallaschofski,Karl H. Ladwig,Fabian J. Theis,Karsten Suhre,Karsten Suhre,Jerzy Adamski,Thomas Illig,Annette Peters,Rui Wang-Sattler +20 more
TL;DR: It is shown that smoking-related changes in human serum metabolites are reversible after smoking cessation, consistent with the known cardiovascular risk reduction.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of Metformin on Metabolite Profiles and LDL Cholesterol in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes
Tao Xu,Stefan Brandmaier,Ana C. Messias,Christian Herder,Harmen H.M. Draisma,Ayse Demirkan,Ayse Demirkan,Zhonghao Yu,Janina S. Ried,Toomas Haller,Margit Heier,Monica Campillos,Gisela Fobo,Renee Stark,Christina Holzapfel,Jonathan Adam,Shen Chi,Markus Rotter,Tommaso Panni,Anne S. Boomsma,Thomas Meitinger,Rui Wang-Sattler +51 more
TL;DR: The results indicate that metformin intake activates AMPK and consequently suppresses FADS, which leads to reduced levels of the three acyl-alkyl PCs and LDL-C, which suggest potential beneficial effects of met formin in the prevention of cardiovascular disease.
