Three parallel algorithms for classical molecular dynamics are presented. The first assigns each processor a fixed subset of atoms; the second assigns each a fixed subset of inter-atomic forces to compute; the third assigns each a fixed spatial region. The algorithms are suitable for molecular dynamics models which can be difficult to parallelize efficiently—those with short-range forces where the neighbors of each atom change rapidly. They can be implemented on any distributed-memory parallel machine which allows for message-passing of data between independently executing processors. The algorithms are tested on a standard Lennard-Jones benchmark problem for system sizes ranging from 500 to 100,000,000 atoms on several parallel supercomputers--the nCUBE 2, Intel iPSC/860 and Paragon, and Cray T3D. Comparing the results to the fastest reported vectorized Cray Y-MP and C90 algorithm shows that the current generation of parallel machines is competitive with conventional vector supercomputers even for small problems. For large problems, the spatial algorithm achieves parallel efficiencies of 90% and a 1840-node Intel Paragon performs up to 165 faster than a single Cray C9O processor. Trade-offs between the three algorithms and guidelines for adapting them to more complex molecular dynamics simulations are also discussed.

Nanocarbon Hybrids with Silicon, Sulfur, or Paper/Textile for High‐Energy Lithium Ion Batteries

A method of regulating a temperature of a human body includes: (1) providing an article of clothing including a textile, wherein the textile includes at least one porous layer including a polyolefin; and (2) placing the article of clothing adjacent to the human body. Infrared-transparent porous polymer textile for human body cooling and heating

A hard X‐ray full field microscope from Xradia Inc. has been installed at SSRL on a 54‐pole wiggler end station at beam line 6‐2. It has been optimized to operate from 5–14 keV with resolution as high as 30 nm. High quality images are achieved using a vertical beam stabilizer and condenser scanner with high efficiency zone plates with 30 nm outermost zone width. The microscope has been used in Zernike phase contrast, available at 5.4 keV and 8 keV, as well as absorption contrast to image a variety of biological, environmental and materials samples. Calibration of the X‐ray attenuation with crystalline apatite enabled quantification of bone density of plate‐like and rod‐like regions of mouse bone trabecula. 3D tomography of individual lacuna revealed the surrounding cell canaliculi and processes. 3D tomography of chiral branched PbSe nanowires showed orthogonal branches around a central nanowire.

Artificial skins reproducing properties of human skin are emerging and significant for study in various areas, such as robotics, medicine, and textiles. Perspiration, as one of the most imperative thermoregulation functions of human skin, is gaining increasing attention, but how to realize ideal artificial skin for perspiration simulation remains challenging. Here, an integrated 3D hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity design is proposed for artificial sweating skin (i‐TRANS). Based on normal fibrous wicking materials, the selective surface modification with gradient of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) creates hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity contrast in both lateral and vertical directions. With the additional help of bottom hydrophilic Nylon 6 nanofibers, the constructed i‐TRANS is able to transport “sweat” directionally without trapping undesired excess water and attain uniform “secretion” of sweat droplets on the top surface, decently mimicking human skin perspiration situation. This fairly comparable simulation not only presents new insights for replicating skin properties, but also provides proper in vitro testing platforms for perspiration‐relevant research, greatly avoiding unwanted interference from the “skin” layer. In addition, the facile, fast, and cost‐effective fabrication approach and versatile usage of i‐TRANS can further facilitate its application.

An Integrated 3D Hydrophilicity/Hydrophobicity Design for Artificial Sweating Skin (i‐TRANS) Mimicking Human Body Perspiration

This letter attempts to address the problem on the emergence of negative eigenvalues in the coherency matrix after the compressing of multilook polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. A new nine-parameter expression for the eigenvalue decomposition of the coherency matrix is introduced, and a new compression algorithm is proposed for multilook polarimetric data with this expression. By comparing it with the NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Airborne SAR compression algorithm, the authors analyze the new algorithm's compression accuracy, signal-to-noise ratio, and the ability to preserve the data's polarimetric property. For polarimetric SAR data, it is important to preserve the polarimetric property of a target. The proposed algorithm has this ability which is illustrated by the comparison of the polarimetric signatures. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed methods is demonstrated by using the experimental SAR data.
