Charge transfer enhancement in the SERS of a single molecule.

Abstract: We measured the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of individual gold nanoparticle-4-aminobenzenethiol (ABT)-gold film junctions to investigate the charge-transfer (CT) enhancement of the SERS signals. Despite the mild electromagnetic field enhancement (∼105) and high surface density of the ABT-molecules (∼240 molecules/hotspot) at the junctions, we observed the clear spectral and temporal signatures of CT-enhanced single-molecule SERS (SM-SERS). The result reveals that only a small fraction of the molecules at the junction has a significant CT-enhancement of 101∼103, whereas the rest of the molecules are nearly CT-inactive. Furthermore, the result also proves that overall (charge-transfer and electromagnetic) enhancement of 106∼108 is sufficient to observe the SM-SERS of an electronically off-resonant molecule, which disproves the widespread belief that a minimum enhancement of ∼1014 is required for SM-SERS.

The effect of CYP2C19 polymorphism on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of clopidogrel: A possible mechanism for clopidogrel resistance

Abstract: We evaluated the effect of the CYP2C19 genotype on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamcis of clopidogrel. Twenty-four subjects were divided into three groups on the basis of their CYP2C19 genotype: homozygous extensive metabolizers (homoEMs, n = 8), heterozygous EMs (heteroEMs, n = 8), and poor metabolizers (PMs, n = 8). After a single 300-mg loading dose of clopidogrel on day 1, followed by a 75-mg daily maintenance dose from days 2 to 7, we measured the plasma levels of clopidogrel and assessed the antiplatelet effect as pharmacodynamics. The mean clopidogrel area under the curve (AUC) for PMs was 1.8- and 2.9-fold higher than that for heteroEMs and homoEMs, respectively (P = 0.013). The mean peak plasma concentration in PMs was 1.8- and 4.7-fold higher than that of heteroEMs and homoEMs, respectively (P = 0.008). PMs exhibited a significantly lower antiplatelet effect than heteroEMs or homoEMs (P < 0.001). From these findings it is clear that the CYP2C19 genotype affects the plasma levels of clopidogrel and modulates the antiplatelet effect of clopidogrel.

Performance of photon reconstruction and identification with the CMS detector in proton-proton collisions at √s = 8 TeV

Abstract: A description is provided of the performance of the CMS detector for photon reconstruction and identification in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV at the CERN LHC. Details are given on the reconstruction of photons from energy deposits in the electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) and the extraction of photon energy estimates. The reconstruction of electron tracks from photons that convert to electrons in the CMS tracker is also described, as is the optimization of the photon energy reconstruction and its accurate modelling in simulation, in the analysis of the Higgs boson decay into two photons. In the barrel section of the ECAL, an energy resolution of about 1% is achieved for unconverted or late-converting photons from H→γγ decays. Different photon identification methods are discussed and their corresponding selection efficiencies in data are compared with those found in simulated events.

Organizational expatriates and self-initiated expatriates: who adjusts better to work and life in Japan?

Abstract: Expatriates are often presented in the cross-cultural adjustment literature as a homogeneous, broad population. However, recent research that makes a distinction between organizational expatriates (OEs), those who are dispatched by their home companies to international posts, and self-initiated expatriates (SIEs), those who themselves make the decision to live and work abroad, has identified differences between the two groups. The present study compares the cross-cultural adjustment of these two groups of expatriates. Survey results of 179 expatriates in Japan show that SIEs are better adjusted to general aspects of their host country and interactions with host-country nationals than OEs. Suggestions for practice are provided.

A Meta-analysis of Gender Differences in Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help

Abstract: Objective: The present study aims to examine gender differences in attitudes toward professional psychological help–seeking behavior and how gender differences could be affected by other cultural factor such as race. Participants: The authors selected studies that involved undergraduate and graduate students as samples, making the total number of participants in this meta-analysis 5,713. Methods: Statistical procedures were administrated by the MIX (Meta-analysis with Interactive eXplanations) program, which does meta-analyses. Results and Conclusions: The results indicated that gender itself was a significant predictor on attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help. In addition, individual's cultural background (eg, Western versus non-Western ethnicity) moderated the gender differences on attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help. Practical implications for mental health professionals in college settings were discussed.
