Abstract: We report the observation of a narrow charmoniumlike state produced in the exclusive decay process B+/--->K+/-pi(+)pi(-)J/psi. This state, which decays into pi(+)pi(-)J/psi, has a mass of 3872.0+/-0.6(stat)+/-0.5(syst) MeV, a value that is very near the M(D0)+M(D(*0)) mass threshold. The results are based on an analysis of 152M B-Bmacr; events collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance in the Belle detector at the KEKB collider. The signal has a statistical significance that is in excess of 10sigma.

Abstract: The CEBAF large acceptance spectrometer (CLAS) is used to study photo- and electro-induced nuclear and hadronic reactions by providing efficient detection of neutral and charged particles over a good fraction of the full solid angle. A collaboration of about 30 institutions has designed, assembled, and commissioned CLAS in Hall B at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The CLAS detector is based on a novel six-coil toroidal magnet which provides a largely azimuthal field distribution. Trajectory reconstruction using drift chambers results in a momentum resolution of 0.5% at forward angles. Cherenkov counters, time-of-flight scintillators, and electromagnetic calorimeters provide good particle identification. Fast triggering and high data-acquisition rates allow operation at a luminosity of 10 34 nucleon cm −2 s −1 . These capabilities are being used in a broad experimental program to study the structure and interactions of mesons, nucleons, and nuclei using polarized and unpolarized electron and photon beams and targets. This paper is a comprehensive and general description of the design, construction and performance of CLAS.

Abstract: We report the first observation of the B-->(D) over barD(sJ)(2317) and B-->(D) over barD(sJ)(2457) decays based on 123.8x10(6) B (B) over bar events collected with the Belle detector at KEKB. We observe the D-sJ(2317) decay to D(s)pi(0) and the D-sJ(2457) decay to the D(s)(*)pi(0) and D(s)gamma final states. We also set 90% C.L. upper limits for the decays D-sJ(2317)-->D-s*gamma, D-sJ(2457)-->D-s*gamma, D-sJ(2457)-->D(s)pi(0), and D-sJ(2457)-->D(s)pi(+)pi(-).

Abstract: In an exclusive measurement of the reaction {gamma}d {yields} K{sup +} K{sup -} p n, a narrow peak that can be attributed to an exotic baryon with strangeness S = +1 is seen in the K{sup +}n invariant mass spectrum. The peak is at 1542 {+-} 5 MeV/c{sup 2} with a measured width of 21 MeV/c{sup 2} FWHM, equivalent to the experimental invariant mass resolution. The statistical significance of the peak is 5.3 {+-} 0.5 {sigma} for a Gaussian peak shape on top of a smooth background.

Abstract: Quercetin is a flavonoid molecule ubiquitous in nature and functions as an anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory agent with little toxicity in vivo and in vitro. Dose- and time-dependent effect of quercetin has been investigated on proinflammatory cytokine expression and NO production, focusing on its effects on the MAP kinases and the NF-κB signal transduction pathways in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells by using RT-PCR and immunoblotting. Quercetin strongly reduced activation of phosphorylated ERK kinase and p38 MAP kinase but not JNK MAP kinase by LPS treatment. In addition, quercetin treatment inhibited NF-κB activation through stabilization of the NF-κB/IκB complex and IκB degradation and proinflammatory cytokines and NO/iNOS expression. Quercetin may exert its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties in the effect molecules such as proinflammatory cytokines and NO/iNOS by suppressing the activation of ERK and p38 MAP kinase, and NF-κB/IκB signal transduction pathways.

Abstract: The Runx2 (CBFA1/AML3/PEBP2alphaA) transcription factor promotes lineage commitment and differentiation by activating bone phenotypic genes in postproliferative osteoblasts. However, the presence of Runx2 in actively dividing osteoprogenitor cells suggests that the protein may also participate in control of osteoblast growth. Here, we show that Runx2 is stringently regulated with respect to cell cycle entry and exit in osteoblasts. We addressed directly the contribution of Runx2 to bone cell proliferation using calvarial osteoblasts from wild-type and Runx2-deficient mice (i.e., Runx2(-/-) and Runx2(DeltaC/DeltaC)). Runx2(DeltaC/DeltaC) mice express a protein lacking the Runx2 COOH terminus, which integrates several cell proliferation-related signaling pathways (e.g., Smad, Yes/Src, mitogen-activated protein kinase, and retinoblastoma protein). Calvarial cells but not embryonic fibroblasts from Runx2(-/-) or Runx2(DeltaC/DeltaC) mutant mice exhibit increased cell growth rates as reflected by elevations of DNA synthesis and G(1)-S phase markers (e.g., cyclin E). Reintroduction of Runx2 into Runx2(-/-) calvarial cells by adenoviral delivery restores stringent cell growth control. Thus, Runx2 regulates normal osteoblast proliferation, and the COOH-terminal region is required for this biological function. We propose that Runx2 promotes osteoblast maturation at a key developmental transition by supporting exit from the cell cycle and activating genes that facilitate bone cell phenotype development.

Abstract: The self-aggregation behavior and microscopic characteristics of hydrophobically modified glycol chitosans (HGCs), prepared by covalent attachment of 5β-cholanic acid to glycol chitosan, were investigated by using 1H NMR, dynamic light scattering, fluorescence spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The HGCs formed self-aggregates in an aqueous phase by intra- or intermolecular association between hydrophobic 5β-cholanic acids attached to glycol chitosan. The critical aggregation concentrations (cacs) of the HGCs were dependent on the degree of substitution (DS) of 5β-cholanic acid and were significantly lower than those of low molecular weight surfactants. The mean diameters of the self-aggregates decreased with the increase in the DS of 5β-cholanic acid because of the formation of compact hydrophobic inner cores. Abstract: Untethered nodes in mobile ad hoc networks strongly depend on the efficient use of their batteries. In this paper, we propose a new metric, the drain rate, to forecast the lifetime of nodes according to current traffic conditions. This metric is combined with the value of the remaining battery capacity to determine which nodes can be part of an active route. We describe new route selection mechanisms for MANET routing protocols, which we call the minimum drain rate (MDR) and the conditional minimum drain rate (CMDR). MDR extends nodal battery life and the duration of paths, while CMDR also minimizes the total transmission energy consumed per packet. Using the ns-2 simulator and the dynamic source routing (DSR) protocol, we compare MDR and CMDR against prior proposals for energy-aware routing and show that using the drain rate for energy-aware route selection offers superior performance results. Abstract: We report measurements of branching fractions for charged and neutral $B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\eta}}_{c}K$ decays where the ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{c}$ meson is reconstructed in the ${K}_{S}^{0}{K}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{\mp}}$, ${K}^{+}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$, ${K}^{*0}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$, and $p\overline{p}$ decay channels. The neutral ${B}^{0}$ channel is a $CP$ eigenstate and can be used to measure the $CP$ violation parameter $\mathrm{sin} 2{\ensuremath{\varphi}}_{1}$. We also report the first observation of the ${B}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\eta}}_{c}{K}^{*0}$ mode. The results are based on an analysis of $29.1\text{ }{\mathrm{f}\mathrm{b}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ of data collected by the Belle detector at KEKB.

Abstract: In the process of screening for pancreatic lipase inhibitors, which could be used as an anti-obesity measure, the methanol extract of Dioscorea nipponica Makino powder (DP) appeared to have potent inhibitory activity against porcine pancreatic lipase with an IC50 value of 5-10 μg/ml, where the enzyme activity was assayed by using 4-methylumbelliferyl oleate as a substrate. Further purification of active components present in the herb generated dioscin that belongs to the saponin family. Dioscin and its aglycone, diosgenin, both suppressed the time-dependent increase of blood triacylglycerol level when orally injected with corn oil to mice, suggesting their inhibitory potential against fat absorption. Sprague-Dawley rats fed on a high-fat diet containing 5% Dioscorea nipponica Makino and 40% beef tallow gained significantly less body weight and adipose tissue than control animals fed on a high-fat diet alone during an 8-week experimental period (P<0.05).

Abstract: Rab proteins are members of the Ras superfamily of small GTP binding proteins and play important roles in various intracellular trafficking steps. We investigated the role of Rha1, an Arabidopsis Rab5 homolog, in intracellular trafficking in Arabidopsis protoplasts. In the presence of a dominant-negative mutant of Rha1, soluble vacuolar cargo proteins such as sporamin:green fluorescent protein (Spo:GFP) and Arabidopsis aleurain like protein:GFP are not delivered to the central vacuole; instead, they accumulate as a diffuse or punctate staining pattern within the cell. Spo:GFP at the punctate stains observed in the presence of hemagglutinin:Rha1[S24N] is colocalized with endogenous vacuolar sorting receptor (VSR(At-1)), which is known to localize primarily to the prevacuolar compartment, whereas Spo:GFP in the diffuse pattern is associated with tonoplasts. Furthermore, expression of Rha1[S24N] causes the secretion of a portion of the vacuolar proteins into medium. However, the inhibitory effect of Rha1[S24N] on vacuolar trafficking is relieved partially by coexpressed wild-type Rha1. Based on these results, we propose that Rha1 plays a critical role in the trafficking of soluble cargoes from the prevacuolar compartment to the central vacuole.

Abstract: We report on measurements of differential cross sections dsigma/dp(T) for prompt charm meson production in ppmacr; collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV using 5.8+/-0.3 pb(-1) of data from the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The data are collected with a new trigger that is sensitive to the long lifetime of hadrons containing heavy flavor. The charm meson cross sections are measured in the central rapidity region |y| K-pi(+), D(*+)-->D0pi(+), D+-->K-pi(+)pi(+), D(+)(s)-->phipi(+), and their charge conjugates. The measured cross sections are compared to theoretical calculations.

Abstract: To identify candidate genes that could be used as diagnostic and therapeutic targets for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), we searched for the genes that are overexpressed in HCC by combining representational difference analysis and microarray. Genes such as glypican-3 (GPC3), insulin-like growth factor 2, long-chain fatty-acid-coenzyme A ligase 4, farnesyl diphosphate synthase were frequently identified in our screening. Northern blot analysis with these four genes confirmed their overexpression in HCC. Among them we found that GPC3 transcript is upregulated in six out of seven cases of HCC. Immunoblot and immunohistochemical staining using polyclonal anti-GPC3 antibodies further confirmed that GPC3 protein is indeed increased in HCC tumor samples. We also found that GPC3 is secreted into culture media from cell lines derived from HCC. We conclude that GPC3 is a good molecular marker for HCC.

Abstract: Nano scale body-tied FinFETs have been firstly fabricated. They have fin top width of 30 nm, fin bottom width of 61 nm, fin height of 99 nm, and gate length of 60 nm. This Omega MOSFET shows excellent transistor characteristics, such as very low subthreshold swing, Drain Induced Barrier Lowering (DIBL) of 24 mV/V, almost no body bias effect, and orders of magnitude lower I/sub SUB//I/sub D/ than planar type DRAM cell transistors.
