TL;DR: In this article, the authors utilize the classified board to test the quiet life hypothesis and find that managers entrenched by the staggered board adopt significantly less risky strategies, consistent with the quiet-life hypothesis.
Abstract: The quiet life hypothesis posits that entrenched managers are well insulated from removal and thus prefer to enjoy a quiet life, i.e. they tend to be less ambitious, avoid difficult decisions and engage in less risk-taking (Bertrand and Mullainathan, 2003). We utilize the staggered board (or classified board) to test this hypothesis. The staggered board is a powerful takeover defence that enables inefficient managers to evade the discipline of the takeover market, thereby exacerbating managerial entrenchment (Bebchuk and Cohen, 2005). We find that managers entrenched by the staggered board adopt significantly less risky strategies, consistent with the quiet life hypothesis. In particular, the presence of a staggered board reduces the volatility of stock returns by 4.46%. We also show that our conclusion is unlikely affected by the presence of endogeneity.

TL;DR: In this article, a dynamic computable general equilibrium (CGE) model was used to investigate resource loss effects from flooding and to provide recommendations on disaster risk reduction policies, which found that losses of resources had major negative impacts on real gross domestic product (GDP).
Abstract: The objectives of this research are to investigate resource loss effects from flooding and to provide recommendations on disaster risk reduction policies. This research utilized a dynamic computable general equilibrium (CGE) model, which found that losses of resources had major negative impacts on real gross domestic product (GDP). Transitioning from national catastrophe insurance fund to an international risk pooling approach is discussed, and as the Global Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility has not yet been established, our proposal suggests the Association of Southeast Asian Nations plus three (ASEAN + 3) Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (ACRIF) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations plus three catastrophic bonds (ASEAN + 3 CAT bonds) as effective means of reducing fiscal liabilities arising from natural disasters, also effectively enhancing disaster risk reduction. These tools are complementary to Catastrophe Risk Swaps which are innovative global financial adaptation strategies designed to make communities and governments more resilient to disaster damages. They are ex-ante risk financing tools and sources of liquidity for damage restoration and economic recovery, which facilitates flexibility among the Association of Southeast Asian Nations plus three (ASEAN + 3) and other governments requiring special assistance. Most importantly, utilization of insurance and catastrophic bonds promotes the achievement of set objectives of global adaptation strategies, sustainable economic growth, and climate resilient development.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the motivations of Thai working and holiday makers who were granted a work and holiday visa to Australia and found that the existential motivation under ERG theory plays a crucial role and is the predominant driver of Thai WHMs in both the prior to and during the visit phases.
Abstract: This study investigates the motivations of Thai working and holiday makers (WHMs), who were granted a work and holiday visa to Australia. This study extends the Existence, Relatedness and Growth (ERG) theory by integrating the socio-psychological motivation theory of tourists over two phases of experience, namely, the prior to (anticipation) and during (on-site) travel phase. This article employs a netnographic study of Thai websites and blogs relating to WHMs as its research method, in order to determine the nature of the motivations. The results reveal a different emphasis on the nature of motivations between the prior to and during the visit phases. The existential motivation under ERG theory, particularly on the monetary aspect, plays a crucial role and is the predominant driver of Thai WHMs in both the prior to and during the visit phases. This study shows how Thai WHMs pose unique motivations that differ from those of WHMs discussed in the Western and Asian literature.
