Abstract: The influence of slope gradient on erosion rate differs for rill and interrill conditions. Rill erosion increases substantially more with increasing slope gradient than interrill erosion. Combining the two erosion processes into single data sets led to the development of regression equations (e.g., USLE) that overestimated the effect of slope gradient on erosion rate for low slope gradients and short slopes. This study investigated the change in interrill erosion rate with slope gradient and examined its relationship to runoff velocity. A sandy loam (grey brown luvisol) was packed in 100×40×10 cm3 soil trays and subjected to simulated rainfall for a period of 75 min. Rain-impacted flow erosion and downslope splash were monitored, and runoff velocity measurements were made at three positions within the flume. Downslope splash erosion never accounted for more than 20% of the total erosion. Rain-impacted flow erosion peaked early in the simulation then decreased to a constant rate; erosion rate was therefore probably detachment-limited. For a constant runoff rate, rain-impacted flow erosion increased roughly with the square root of slope gradient, as did the runoff velocity. Soil loss was correlated (0.81) with runoff velocity under the experimental conditions.

Abstract: Objective To determine the role of colonic barrier defects and low-grade inflammation in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)-like symptoms in quiescent inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Design Caecal biopsies were collected from 51 IBS, 49 quiescent IBD (31 Crohn9s disease (CD) and 18 ulcerative colitis (UC)) patients and 27 controls. IBS was assessed using the Rome III criteria and the IBS severity score. Epithelial barrier integrity was evaluated by determining the paracellular permeability of biopsies mounted in Ussing chambers and the mRNA expression of tight junction proteins (ZO-1, α-catenin and occludin). Low-grade inflammation was evaluated by counting cells, including intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs), eosinophils and mast cells, and by determining the mRNA and protein expression of tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α in biopsies and culture supernatants. Results IBS-like symptoms were present in 35.4 and 38% of CD and UC patients, respectively. Paracellular permeability was significantly increased in both quiescent IBD with IBS-like symptoms and IBS compared with quiescent IBD without IBS-like symptoms (p Conclusions In quiescent IBD, IBS-like symptoms related to persistent subclinical inflammation associated with increased colonic paracellular permeability. A persistent increase in TNF-α in colonic mucosa may contribute to the epithelial barrier defects associated with abdominal pain in quiescent IBD, but not in IBS. Optimisation of anti-inflammatory therapy may be considered in quiescent IBD with IBS-like symptoms.

Abstract: This paper considers the problem of obtaining high quality attitude extraction and gyros bias estimation from typical low cost intertial measurement units for applications in control of unmanned aerial vehiccles. Two different non-linear complementary filters are proposed: Direct complementary filter and Passive non-linear complementary filter. Both filters evolve explicity on the special orthogonal group SO(3) and can be expressed in quaternion form for easy implementation. An extension to the passive ocmplementary filter is proposed to provide adaptive gyro bias estimation.

Abstract: Context. Hot Jupiters exhibit atmospheric temperatures ranging from hundreds to thousands of Kelvin. Because of their large day-night temperature differences, condensable species that are stable in the gas phase on the dayside – such as TiO and silicates – may condense and gravitationally settle on the nightside. Atmospheric circulation may counterbalance this tendency to gravitationally settle. This three-dimensional (3D) mixing of condensable species has not previously been studied for hot Jupiters, yet it is crucial to assess the existence and distribution of TiO and silicates in the atmospheres of these planets.Aims. We investigate the strength of the nightside cold trap in hot Jupiters atmospheres by investigating the mechanisms and strength of the vertical mixing in these stably stratified atmospheres. We apply our model to the particular case of TiO to address the question of whether TiO can exist at low pressure in sufficient abundances to produce stratospheric thermal inversions despite the nightside cold trap.Methods. We modeled the 3D circulation of HD 209458b including passive (i.e. radiatively inactive) tracers that advect with the 3D flow, with a source and sink term on the nightside to represent their condensation into haze particles and their gravitational settling.Results. We show that global advection patterns produce strong vertical mixing that can keep condensable species aloft as long as they are trapped in particles of sizes of a few microns or less on the nightside. We show that vertical mixing results not from small-scale convection but from the large-scale circulation driven by the day-night heating contrast. Although this vertical mixing is not diffusive in any rigorous sense, a comparison of our results with idealized diffusion models allows a rough estimate of the effective vertical eddy diffusivities in these atmospheres. The parametrization Kzz =5 × 104 / P bar m2 s-1 , valid from ~1 bar to a few μ bar, can be used in 1D models of HD 209458b. Moreover, our models exhibit strong spatial and temporal variability in the tracer concentration that could result in observable variations during either transit or secondary eclipse measurements. Finally, we apply our model to the case of TiO in HD 209458b and show that the day-night cold trap would deplete TiO if it condenses into particles bigger than a few microns on the planet’s nightside, keeping it from creating the observed stratosphere of the planet.
