TL;DR: The authors examines the post-9/11 empirical literature on terrorism and finds that terrorism has little or no effect on economic growth or GDP except in small terrorism-plagued countries.
Abstract: This overview examines critically the post-9/11 empirical literature on terrorism. Major contributions by both economists and political scientists are included. We focus on five main themes: the changing nature of terrorism, the organization of terrorist groups, the effectiveness of counterterrorism policies, modern drivers or causes of terrorism, and the economic consequences of terrorism. In so doing, we investigate a host of questions that include: How do terrorist groups attract and retain members? What determines the survival of terrorist groups? Is poverty a root cause of terrorism? What counterterrorism measures work best? In the latter regard, we find that many counterterrorism policies have unintended negative consequences owing to attack transference and terrorist backlash. This suggests the need for novel policies such as service provision to counter some terrorist groups' efforts to provide such services. Despite terrorists' concerted efforts to damage targeted countries' economies, the empirical literature shows that terrorism has had little or no effect on economic growth or GDP except in small terrorism-plagued countries. At the sectoral level, terrorism can adversely affect tourism and foreign direct investment, but these effects are rather transient and create transference of activities to other sectors, thus cushioning the consequences.

TL;DR: It is assumed that the central noradrenergic system has a stimulatory effect on the release of TRH from the hypothalamus, reflected in the authors' experiments by the changes of serum TSH levels.
Abstract: Systemic administration of drugs affecting central noradrenergic and dopaminergic systems was used to evaluate their role in the regulation of TSH secretion in the rat Alpha-methyl-p-tyrosine (∞-MT) caused a depletion of brain norepinephrine and dopamine and a gradual decrease of serum TSH levels Specific inhibitors of dopamine-/3-hydroxylase, diethyldithiocarbamate (DDC) and FLA 63, depleted central norepinephrine only and led to a simultaneous striking decrease of serum TSH Blockade of alpha adrenergic receptors with phenoxybenzamine, but not with phentolamine, also depressed serum TSH Blockade of beta receptors with propranolol had no effect In contrast, the centrally and peripherally acting alpha receptor agonist, clonidine, increased serum TSH, whereas the peripherally acting methoxamine caused a decrease, probably due to nonspecific stress effect A dose-related rapid inhibition of TSH secretion was observed following stimulation of dopamine receptors with apo-morphine Injection of L-Dopa had

TL;DR: Calorimetric analyses suggest that both mitochondrial membranes are naturally fluid to the extent that the integrat membrane proteins can diffuse laterally in the bilayer lipid in the inner, energy transducing membrane.

TL;DR: Arterial occlusion of the internal iliac artery was successful in the relief of pain due to primary and secondary neoplasms of the bony pelvis in 8 of 9 patients.
Abstract: Arterial occlusion of the internal iliac artery was successful in the relief of pain due to primary and secondary neoplasms of the bony pelvis in 8 of 9 patients. These included 3 giant cell tumors, 1 aneurysmal bone cyst, 1 recurrent chondrosarcoma, 3 metastatic renal cell carcinoma and 1 metastatic clear cell sarcoma. Calcification of the margin of the lesion occurred in 3 of 4 primary neoplasms after infarction. The transcatheter arterial occlusion was accomplished utilizing Gelfoam and stainless steel coils. Although most patients experienced pain and fever for several days following the procedure, no permanent sequelae or complications were encountered.

23 Jun 2006TL;DR: In this paper, a fluid or gas sample may pass through a microsieve-based detection system and/or a particle based detection system of a cartridge, and analysis techniques may be applied to determine the identity and quantity of the captured analytes.
Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatus for detecting the presence of analytes are described. A fluid or gas sample may pass through a microsieve-based detection system and/or a particle- based detection system of a cartridge. Detection and analysis techniques may be applied to determine the identity and quantity of the captured analytes.
