TL;DR: In this article, a new method that combines interpolation between neighboring A-lines with cross-correlation for high precision estimation of the transverse displacement is proposed, which can produce quality lateral-elastograms that display the lateral component of the strain tensor.
Abstract: The present invention is directed toward a new method that combines interpolation between neighboring A-lines with cross-correlation for high precision estimation of the transverse displacement Due to this high precision lateral estimation, the method of the present invention can produce quality lateral-elastograms that display the lateral component of the strain tensor These higher precision lateral displacement estimates also allow a finer correction for the lateral decorrelation that corrupts the axial estimation The method of the present invention may be employed to divide the lateral-elastogram by the axial-elastogram on a pixel-by-pixel basis, in order to produce a new image that displays the distribution of Poisson's ratios in the tissue

TL;DR: Seven cases of functioning and two cases of nonfunctioning parathyroid carcinoma are presented together with a general discussion of this disease, which may be associated with prolonged survival.
Abstract: Seven cases of functioning and two cases of nonfunctioning parathyroid carcinoma are presented together with a general discussion of this disease. Functioning parathyroid carcinoma may be associated with prolonged survival. The morbidity and mortality from this disease are generally related to the prolonged hypercalcemia that occurs. The hypercalcemia is best treated with excision of local recurrences; however, this surgery is most often palliative and seldom curative. The best operative results were obtained when the disease could be localized preoperatively. Neck and mediastinal exploration in the absence of physical or radiographic evidence of recurrence failed to affect serum calcium levels. Two patients with non-functioning parathyroid cancer did poorly compared with those with functioning parathyroid carcinoma. The few cases reported in the literature are also suggestive of a more aggressive disease. The failure of this tumor to produce parathyroid hormone may allow it to escape clinical attention until it has achieved an advanced state.

10 Jun 1998TL;DR: In this article, the authors described a procedure for inserting a sterilization device through the uterus and into the isthmic portion of the fallopian tube where the heating element (14) is energized and the heat generated destroys the mucosal layer and damages the muscular layer of the tube wall inducing sufficient scarification to occlude the tube.
Abstract: A sterilization device (10) is provided having a flexible housing element (12) that is smaller in diameter than the diameter of the lumen of the isthmic portion of the fallopian tube, a heating element (14) carried by the housing element adjacent to its distal end, and an energy source (18) coupled to the heating element such that when the energy source is energized the temperature of the heating element will be increased. A procedure is described for inserting the sterilization device (10) through the uterus and into the isthmic portion of the fallopian tube where the heating element (14) is energized and the heat generated destroys the mucosal layer and damages the muscular layer of the fallopian tube wall inducing sufficient scarification to occlude the fallopian tube.
