TL;DR: It is shown numerically and experimentally that speckle patterns measured at the non-Nyquist range still yield good reconstructions, and the calculated distances for the proposed AO-system are evaluated experimentally using the conventional free-space phase retrieval setup.
Abstract: A design for a single-plane multiple speckle pattern phase retrieval technique using a deformable mirror (DM) is analyzed within the formalism of complex ABCD-matrices, facilitating its use in conjunction with dynamic wavefronts. The variable focal length DM positioned at a Fourier plane of a lens comprises the adaptive optical (AO) system that replaces the time-consuming axial displacements in the conventional free-space multiple plane setup. Compared with a spatial light modulator, a DM has a smooth continuous surface which avoids pixelation, pixel cross-talk and non-planarity issues. The calculated distances for the proposed AO-system are evaluated experimentally using the conventional free-space phase retrieval setup. Two distance ranges are investigated depending on whether the measurement planes satisfy the Nyquist detector sampling condition or not. It is shown numerically and experimentally that speckle patterns measured at the non-Nyquist range still yield good reconstructions. A DM with a surface height of 25 microns and an aperture diameter of 5.2 mm may be used to reconstruct spherical phase patterns with 50-micron fringe spacing.

TL;DR: It is suggested that communication- oriented research can provide a starting point for evidence-based reflections on how to incorporate a counseling mentality in genetic consultation, and the need for creating a platform for targeted training of genetic counselors based on communication-oriented research findings is discussed.
Abstract: This paper reports on the workshop ‘Genetic Counseling/Consultations in South-East Asia’ at the 10th Asia Pacific Conference on Human Genetics in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in December 2012. The workshop brought together professionals and language/communication scholars from South-East Asia, and the UK. The workshop aimed at addressing culture- and context-specific genetic counseling/consultation practices in South-East Asia. As a way of contextualizing genetic counseling/consultation in South-East Asia, we first offer an overview of communication-oriented research generally, drawing attention to consultation and counseling as part of a communicative continuum with distinctive interactional features. We then provide examples of genetic counseling/consultation research in Hong Kong. As other countries in South-East Asia have not yet embarked on communication-oriented empirical research, we report on the current practices of genetic counseling/consultation in these countries in order to identify similarities and differences as well as key obstacles that could be addressed through future research. Three issues emerged as ‘problematic’: language, religion and culture. We suggest that communication-oriented research can provide a starting point for evidence-based reflections on how to incorporate a counseling mentality in genetic consultation. To conclude, we discuss the need for creating a platform for targeted training of genetic counselors based on communication-oriented research findings.

TL;DR: In this article, the Ontong Java Plateau (OJP) basalts were analyzed for Os and Hf isotopic composition to further investigate the origin of the bimodal isotope composition of OJP basalts, showing that they are products of 20-30% degree of melting and possess ocean-island-like Pb, Nd, and Sr isotopic signatures.

TL;DR: Folic acid-based supplementation is not beneficial and may even be harmful in the secondary prevention of cardiovascular events in patients with unstable angina and non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction and further studies on the safety of such supplements are suggested.
Abstract: Homocysteinemia is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Folic acid combined with vitamins B6 and B12 is effective in lowering homocysteine levels. This randomized placebo-controlled study was designed to determine the effect of a folic acid-based supplement on secondary prevention of clinical events in non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndromes. The study comprised 240 patients with either unstable angina or non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction in the previous 2 weeks who were randomized to a folate group (n = 116) or a placebo group (n = 124). The folate group received 1 mg folic acid, 400 μg vitamin B12, and 10 mg vitamin B6 daily. Clinical outcomes within 6 months were assessed. The composite endpoint of death, nonfatal acute coronary syndrome, and serious re-hospitalization was significantly higher in the folate group; serious re-hospitalization alone was significantly higher in this group. Advanced age and diabetes increased susceptibility to the composite outcome. Folic acid-based sup...
