TL;DR: This first demonstration of a monolithically integrated plasmonic focal plane array (FPA) in the mid-infrared region is shown, using a metal with a two-dimensional hole array on top of an intersubband quantum-dots-in-a-well (DWELL) heterostructure FPA coupled to a read-out integrated circuit.
Abstract: In the past few years, there has been increasing interest in surface plasmon-polaritons, as a result of the strong near-field enhancement of the electric fields at a metal-dielectric interface. Here we show the first demonstration of a monolithically integrated plasmonic focal plane array (FPA) in the mid-infrared region, using a metal with a two-dimensional hole array on top of an intersubband quantum-dots-in-a-well (DWELL) heterostructure FPA coupled to a read-out integrated circuit. Excellent infrared imagery was obtained with over a 160% increase in the ratio of the signal voltage (V(s)) to the noise voltage (V(n)) of the DWELL camera at the resonant wavelength of λ=6.1 μm. This demonstration paves the way for the development of a new generation of pixel-level spectropolarimetric imagers, which will enable bio-inspired (for example, colour vision) infrared sensors with enhanced detectivity (D) or higher operating temperatures.

TL;DR: NDFDA has unusually high toxic potency for a perfluorinated hydrocarbon, and some of the toxic effects caused by this acid are remarkably similar to those seen with 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD).

TL;DR: In this article, a numerical solution for the unsteady flow over a three-dimensional cavity at a freestream Mach number of 1.5 and Reynolds number 1.09 x 10 6.
Abstract: A numerical solution is presented for the unsteady flow over a three-dimensio nal cavity at a freestream Mach number of 1.5 and Reynolds number of 1.09 x 10 6. The self-sustained oscillatory motion within the cavity is generated numerically by integration of the time-dependent compressible three-dimensional Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations. Effects of fine-scale turbulence are simulated via a simple algebraic closure model. Details of the flowfield structure are elucidated, and it is verified that the fundamental behavior of the unsteady phenomena is two dimensional. Comparison with experimental data is made in terms of the mean static pressure and overall acoustic sound pressure levels within the cavity, as well as with the acoustic frequency spectra of the oscillation along the cavity floor and rear bulkhead.

TL;DR: In this article, the problem of technical and economical optimization of the process of microarc discharge oxidation of high-strength aluminium for the fabrication of oxide ceramic layers for tribotechnical purposes is considered in terms of experimental design.
Abstract: The problem of technical and economical optimization of the process of micro-arc discharge oxidation of high-strength aluminium for the fabrication of oxide ceramic layers for tribotechnical purposes is considered in terms of experimental design. To estimate the effectiveness of the process, a generalized parameter is used which accounts for oxide mass yield as a principal parameter, and mechanical and geometrical characteristics of the layer as restricting parameters. The methods of chemical weight, scanning electron microscopy, optical and durometric analyses are used. The influence of the silicate–alkali electrolyte composition and the amount of electricity carried through the cell on the layer properties is discussed. The response surface of the generalized parameter is plotted with the aid of desirability functions. The area of regimes corresponding to 2–3 g l −1 KOH and 2–3 g l −1 Na 2 SiO 3 electrolyte composition and (2.50–3.33)×10 3 C m −2 of carried electricity is outlined for the most effective fabrication of uniform oxide layers with 165–190 μm thickness and 18–23 GPa hardness.

TL;DR: The propagation of Lamb waves in plates has been the subject of numerous investigations since their postulation by Lamb in 1916 [1,2] as discussed by the authors, and theoretical analyses have been reported in plates of cubic [3,4], transversely isotropic [5,6], and orthotropic [7,9] media.
Abstract: The propagation of Lamb waves in plates has been the subject of numerous investigations since their postulation by Lamb in 1916 [1,2]. Most of the work in existence deals with various aspects of these guided waves in plates of isotropic materials. Comparatively speaking a limited number of results has appeared in which Lamb or horizontaly polarized SH wave propagation in anisotropic plates has been considered in any detail. For Lamb waves, theoretical analyses have been reported in plates of cubic [3,4], transversely isotropic [5,6], and orthotropic [7,9] media.
