TLDR
A number of methods for detecting abrupt changes (such as failures) in stochastic dynamical systems are surveyed in this paper, where tradeoffs in complexity versus performance are discussed, ranging from the design of specific failure-sensitive filters, to the use of statistical tests on filter innovations, and the development of jump process formulations.
Abstract
A number of methods for detecting abrupt changes (such as failures) in stochastic dynamical systems are surveyed. The class of linear systems is concentrated on but the basic concepts, if not the detailed analyses, carry over to other classes of systems. The methods surveyed range from the design of specific failure-sensitive filters, to the use of statistical tests on filter innovations, to the development of jump process formulations. Tradeoffs in complexity versus performance are discussed.

Laboratory investigation of a multiple-model state estimation scheme for detection and isolation of leaks in pipelines:

TL;DR: In this article, a model-based estimation scheme was developed as a basis for real-time monitoring of fluid flow in pipelines, which was tested experimentally, and the fluid flow was modelled by a set of nonlinear partial differential equations, represented in a state-space form.

Sensor scheduling strategies for fault isolation in networked control system

TL;DR: A framework for the joint design of sensor scheduling and fault isolation is proposed and the synthesis of fault isolation filter and the communication sequence that ensures the isolability of fault is given.

Detection Filter Design: Spectral Theory and Algorithms

TL;DR: In this article, a new formulation of the detection filter problem is generated by assignment of the closed-loop eigenstructure under certain constraints Detection filters, which are actually a specific class of observes, fix the output error direction of the system so that it can be associated with a particular failure mode and its known design failure direction.

Estimation of parameters in state equations via multiple observers

TL;DR: In this paper, the output of a linear time-invariant system can be asymptotically described by a linear combination of output estimates which are generated by suitable multiple observers.

Failure Detection and Location in Process Control - Integrating a New Model based Technique with Other Methods

TL;DR: The failure detection and location method (FDLM) is discussed, which uses the causal description of the system's power flows to detect and locate system failures without modeling the possible system failure modes.
