An investigation of predictability dynamics of temperature and precipitation in reanalysis datasets over the continental United States

TLDR
In this paper, the authors compare and contrast the chaotic dynamics of daily precipitation and daily mean surface temperature simulated by the reanalysis against observed data over the continental United States, and reveal the inconsistency among the four reanalysis products: the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Modern Era Retrospective-Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA), European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts' ERA-Interim, Japanese Meteorological Agency's Japanese 55-year Reanalysis (JRA-55), and National Center for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research's Reanalysis

Evaluation of variability among different precipitation products in the Northern Great Plains

TL;DR: In this paper, daily total precipitation data derived from CaPA, ERA-Interim, ERA5, JRA-55, MERRA-2 and NLDAS-2 are evaluated over the Assiniboine River Basin (ARB), which represents many of the hydro-climatological complexities associated with the Northern Great Plains.
Journal ArticleDOI

Reliability of reanalyses products in simulating precipitation and temperature characteristics over India

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors evaluated the applicability and robustness of reanalyses in climate related research, especially in precipitation and temperature data, with respect to the IMD gridded data over 34 years.

Performance of Three Reanalysis Precipitation Datasets over the Qinling-Daba Mountains, Eastern Fringe of Tibetan Plateau, China

TL;DR: In this paper, three popular reanalysis precipitation datasets, including ERA-Interim, Japanese 55-year Reanalysis (JRA-55), and National Centers for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research Reanalysis-1 (NCEP/NCAR-1), were evaluated against rain gauge data over the Qinling-Daba Mountains from 2000 to 2014 on monthly, seasonal, and annual scales.

Global Energy and Water Balances in the Latest Reanalyses

TL;DR: The recently released Japanese 55-year Reanalysis (JRA- 55) data are evaluated and compared with three other global reanalyses, namely Interim version of the next European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Re-Analysis (ERA-Interim), Modern Era Retrospective-Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA) and Climate Forecast System Reanalysis(CFSR), in terms of global energy and water balances.

The NCEP/NCAR 40-Year Reanalysis Project

TL;DR: The NCEP/NCAR 40-yr reanalysis uses a frozen state-of-the-art global data assimilation system and a database as complete as possible, except that the horizontal resolution is T62 (about 210 km) as discussed by the authors.

Determining Lyapunov exponents from a time series

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present the first algorithms that allow the estimation of non-negative Lyapunov exponents from an experimental time series, which provide a qualitative and quantitative characterization of dynamical behavior.
