Association of Periodontitis With Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Pilot Study

TLDR
Although unrelated to disease activity, the presence of periodontitis in patients with RA was associated with seropositivity for RF and the anti-CCP antibody, which was highly relevant given the associations of these autoantibodies with poor outcomes and disease pathogenesis in RA.
Abstract
Background: Similarities exist in the epidemiology and immunopathogenesis of periodontitis and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but the associations between their respective disease activities and severities are less well documented. We evaluated the prevalence and severity of periodontitis in United States (U.S.) veterans with RA and their relationship to RA disease activity and severity. Methods: Patients with RA from an outpatient rheumatology clinic were eligible, and patients with osteoarthritis (OA) served as controls. Dentists, masked to the rheumatologic diagnoses, performed periodontal probing and examined dental panoramic radiographs to assess the presence and severity of periodontitis. Associations of periodontitis with RA were examined using multivariate regression, whereas the association of periodontitis with disease-severity measures in RA was examined using the χ2 test. Results: Sixty-nine patients with RA (57 males and 12 females) and 35 patients with OA (30 males and five females) were studied. ...

Periodontal disease and the oral microbiota in new‐onset rheumatoid arthritis

TL;DR: The subgingival microbiota profile in Patients with new-onset RA was similar to that in patients with chronic RA and healthy subjects whose PD was of comparable severity, and overall exposure to P gingivalis was similar among the groups.

Molecular mimicry and autoimmunity

TL;DR: Studies on the role of autoreactive T-cells that are generated secondary to molecular mimicry, the diversity of the T-cell receptor repertoires of auto-reactiveT-cells, the roles of exposure to cryptic antigens, the generation of autoimmune B-cell responses, the interaction of microbiota and chemical adjuvants with the host immune systems all provide clues in advancing the understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in the evolving concept of Molecular mimicry.

The association between rheumatoid arthritis and periodontal disease

TL;DR: There are findings that support the hypothesis that oral infections play a role in RA pathogenesis and the association of PD in RA patients with seropositivity toward rheumatoid factor and the anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibody is discussed.

Revised criteria for the classification of rheumatoid arthritis.

TL;DR: The Bulletin on the Rheumatic Diseases has published all of the classification criteria for the rheumatic diseases to date, and these new revised classified criteria for rheumatoid arthritis are very important as they should provide understanding of the possibly changing face of rheumatism.

Modified disease activity scores that include twenty-eight-joint counts : development and validation in a prospective longitudinal study of patients with rheumatoid arthritis

TL;DR: The Modified DAS that included 28-joint counts were able to discriminate between high and low disease activity (as indicated by clinical decisions of rheumatologists) and are as valid as disease activity scores that include more comprehensive joint counts.
