Cross fostering of low-birthweight piglets
M.G.H. Deen,G. Bilkei +1 more
TL;DR: In contrast to small litters, low-birthweight piglets in large litters missed more nursing episodes and spent more time in "teat disputes" than their heavier littermates both in high- Birthweight (P Relative weight of littermates had a significant effect on low-Birthweight piglet mortality both in large Litters with high- ( P P P >0.05) affected by litter type and litter size.

A cross-sectional study to collect risk factors associated with stillbirths in pig herds
TL;DR: It is clearly demonstrated that breed is a major factor involved in the frequency of stillbirth, and some management practices before or at parturition may reduce the number of stillborn piglets.

Infection of Newborn Piglets with Bordetella pertussis: a New Model for Pertussis
Shokrollah Elahi,Robert Brownlie,J. Korzeniowski,Rachelle M. Buchanan,Brendan P. O’Connor,M. S. Peppler,Scott A. Halperin,Song F. Lee,Lorne A. Babiuk,Volker Gerdts +9 more
TL;DR: A large-animal model for pertussis was developed, which should complement existing rodent models for identifying the immune responses relevant to the design of new vaccines and should help researchers analyze the roles of both maternal and mucosal immunity in disease protection against pertussed cough.

Developed and resolving lesions in porcine proliferative enteropathy: Possible pathogenetic mechanisms
Steven McOrist,L. Roberts,S. Jasni,A.C. Rowland,G.H.K. Lawson,Connie J. Gebhart,Brad T. Bosworth +6 more
TL;DR: Proliferative enteropathy, caused by Lawsonia intracellularis, offers the opportunity to examine bacterial mechanisms that influence epithelial cell proliferation and may disrupt normal processes of cell growth, differentiation or apoptosis in the intestinal epithelium.

TL;DR: It is proposed that influenza virus infection in pigs might present different patterns, from an epidemic outbreak to an endemic form with different waves of infections with a lower incidence.
