TLDR
In this paper, the European Foundation for Osteoporosis and Bone disease (subsequently the International osteopo- rosis Foundation) published guidelines for the diagnosis and management of osteoporrosis in a European setting.Abstract:
Summary Guidance is provided in a European setting on the assessment and treatment of postmenopausal women with or at risk from osteoporosis. Introduction The European Foundation for Osteoporosis and Bone disease (subsequently the International Osteopo- rosis Foundation) published guidelines for the diagnosis and management of osteoporosis in 1997. This manuscript updates these in a European setting. Methods The following areas are reviewed: the role of bone mineral density measurement for the diagnosis of osteoporo- sis and assessment of fracture risk; general and pharmaco- logical management of osteoporosis; monitoring of treatment; assessment of fracture risk; case finding strategies; investigation of patients; health economics of treatment. Results and conclusions A platform is provided on which specific guidelines can be developed for national use.read more

Bone regeneration: current concepts and future directions
TL;DR: Improved 'local' strategies in terms of tissue engineering and gene therapy, or even 'systemic' enhancement of bone repair, are under intense investigation, in an effort to overcome the limitations of the current methods, to produce bone-graft substitutes with biomechanical properties that are as identical to normal bone as possible.

The recent prevalence of osteoporosis and low bone mass in the United States based on bone mineral density at the femoral neck or lumbar spine.
Nicole C. Wright,Anne C. Looker,Kenneth G. Saag,Jeffrey R. Curtis,Elizabeth Delzell,Susan Randall,Bess Dawson-Hughes +6 more
TL;DR: The goal of this study was to estimate the prevalence of osteoporosis and low bone mass based on bone mineral density (BMD) at the femoral neck and the lumbar spine in adults 50 years and older in the United States, and to note that a substantial number of men and women from other racial/ethnic groups also had osteoporeotic BMD orLow bone mass.

Vitamin D: Metabolism, Molecular Mechanism of Action, and Pleiotropic Effects.
TL;DR: The structure of the liganded VDR/RXR complex was recently characterized using cryoelectron microscopy, X-ray scattering, and hydrogen deuterium exchange, which will result in a more complete understanding of VDR coactivator interactions, thus facilitating cell and gene specific clinical applications.

TL;DR: BTM hold promise in fracture risk prediction and for monitoring treatment and Uncertainties over their clinical use can be in part resolved by adopting international reference standards.

TL;DR: This guideline was produced by a multidisciplinary group of experts in the field using the methodology of the Manual for ESHRE Guideline Development, including a thorough systematic search of the literature, quality assessment of the included papers up to September 2014 and consensus within the guideline group on all recommendations.

Risks and benefits of estrogen plus progestin in healthy postmenopausal women: Principal results from the Women's Health Initiative randomized controlled trial

TL;DR: Overall health risks exceeded benefits from use of combined estrogen plus progestin for an average 5.2-year follow-up among healthy postmenopausal US women, and the results indicate that this regimen should not be initiated or continued for primary prevention of CHD.
