The main purpose of soils compaction ratio computing is to check the compaction ratio of soil fill with respect to maximum soil dry unit weight.This study produces compacting soil ratio calculation based on reading of the soil pocket penetrometer. The pocket value within certain procedure contains testing the same point location selected to test soil layer that adopted in standard normal compaction ratio determination. The four to five points pocket penetrometer tool tested at the compacted topsoil layer surface. The results of (130) points indicated that there is a good agreement between compaction ratio and pocket penetrometer readings with the linear interpolating relationship. The study also predicts linear relationships design equations for predicting compaction ratio and modulus of sub-grade reaction with acceptable regression (R2) values but with certain limitations.

In geotechnical investigation, determination oftheseismic bearing capacity of foundation soilconstitutes an important task. The bearing capacity of soil under static loading has been extensivelystudied since the early work of Prandtl (1921).Design of foundation in seismic areas needs specialconsiderations compared to the static case. The inadequate performance of structure during recentearthquake has motivated researches to revise existing methods and to develop new method forseismic resistant design. For foundation of structure built in seismic areas the demands to sustain loadand deformation during earthquake will probably be the severe in their design life. Due to seismicloading foundation may experience decreases in bearing capacity and increases in settlement. Twosource of loading must be taken into consideration inertial loading caused by lateral forces imposed onthe superstructure, kinematic loading caused by the ground movement developed during earthquake.Many techniques used for studying the effect of seismic forces on the soil bearing capacity such as, limitequilibrium method, kinematic approach of yield theory, a variational approach, and unified theory ofstress, which the shape of failure surface has been assumed. The seismic forces are considered as pseudostaticforces acting both on the footing and on the soil under the footing. However, finite element andstress characteristics methods shape of the failure is not required to be assumed.In the present paper, a theoretical analysis has been performed on the basis of Krey's method(friction circle method) with radius of friction circle equal to = 𝑟 sin (∅ − tan−1 𝑘ℎ1−𝑘𝑣)where r is theradius of the circle slip surface to determine the influence of the earthquake acceleration coefficientson the seismic bearing capacity of foundation with assisted by a computer program. The presentstudy is compared with the various theoretical solutions. Slope stability of embankments in highly weathered shale encountered at shallow depths is a major concern in roadway design. This condition was encoun- tered at a bridge location in southeastern Iowa, where dual bridges are part of a 4-lane state highway. The maximum embankment height is 12 meters at the north abutment and 8 meters at the south, with 3H:1V slopes in the longitudinal and transverse direc- tions. Conventional soil borings with Standard Penetration Testing indicated the pres- ence of highly weathered shale at shallow depths. The subsurface conditions indicated the presence of sloping highly weathered shale at both the north and south abutments. A 0.3-meter-thick layer of highly weathered shale was assumed at the clay/weathered shale interface and assigned undrained shear strength of 10kPa per Iowa Department of Transportation guidelines. Slope stability analyses indicated global slope instabil- ity, with failure surfaces propagating through the sloping and highly weathered shale layer. Various alternatives were evaluated at costs ranging from $3,000,000 to $5,000,000. In view of the high cost, a comprehensive subsurface exploration, labora- tory testing, and monitoring program was implemented to evaluate strength and moni- tor slope performance. In-situ testing consisted of Iowa borehole shear tests in the highly weathered shale. Slope stability analyses indicated the slopes to be stable un- der both short-term (end of construction) and long-term (drained) conditions. Incli- nometers and settlement plates were installed during construction to record slope movements. Monitoring data available thus far indicate insignificant movement. The judicious use of in-situ testing and an instrumentation program resulted in significant reduction in construction cost and kept the project within budget limits.
