TLDR
This paper found that participants are significantly more likely to choose social welfare-maximizing actions when matched with an ingroup member when compared to when they are matched with a non-group identity.
Abstract
We present a laboratory experiment that measures the effects of induced group identity on social preferences. We find that when participants are matched with an ingroup member, they show a 47 percent increase in charity concerns and a 93 percent decrease in envy. Likewise, participants are 19 percent more likely to reward an ingroup match for good behavior, but 13 percent less likely to punish an ingroup match for misbehavior. Furthermore, participants are significantly more likely to choose social-welfare-maximizing actions when matched with an ingroup member. All results are consistent with the hypothesis that participants are more altruistic toward an ingroup match. (

Discrimination in a deprived neighbourhood: An artefactual field experiment

TL;DR: This paper examined the discriminatory motives of an understudied demographic: the poorest people in England and found that the observed discriminatory attitudes are the result of out-group negativity rather than in-group favouritism.

Preferences for power

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors develop a new game, the Power Game, to demonstrate that a substantial fraction of individuals enjoy the intrinsic value of power: they accept lower payoffs in exchange for power over others, without any benefits to themselves.

Preferences for Power

TL;DR: In this article, the authors developed a new game, the Power Game, to demonstrate that a substantial fraction of individuals enjoy the intrinsic value of power: they accept lower payoffs in exchange for power over others, without any benefits to themselves, and these preferences exist independently of other components of decision rights, cannot be explained by social preferences and are not driven by mistakes, confusion or signaling intentions.

An Experimental Inquiry into the Nature of Relational Goods, and Their Impact on Co-operation

TL;DR: In this article, the impact of relational goods on the voluntary contributions for the production of a public good was studied. And the authors concluded that both relational goods are important to enhance co-operation, that acquaintance and working together are rather complements than substitutes, and different relational goods produce different effects on cooperation.

Patience Predicts Cooperative Synergy: The Roles of Ingroup Bias and Reciprocity

TL;DR: This article found a positive relationship between a group's mean patience and the within-group cooperative synergy, defined as the group members' performance in the intergroup-competition task relative to their performance in an individual task.

Controlling the false discovery rate: a practical and powerful approach to multiple testing

TL;DR: In this paper, a different approach to problems of multiple significance testing is presented, which calls for controlling the expected proportion of falsely rejected hypotheses -the false discovery rate, which is equivalent to the FWER when all hypotheses are true but is smaller otherwise.

The social identity theory of intergroup behavior

TL;DR: A theory of intergroup conflict and some preliminary data relating to the theory is presented in this article. But the analysis is limited to the case where the salient dimensions of the intergroup differentiation are those involving scarce resources.

A theory of fairness, competition and cooperation

TL;DR: This paper showed that if some people care about equity, the puzzles can be resolved and that the economic environment determines whether the fair types or the selesh types dominate equilibrium behavior in cooperative games.
