This new edition is divided into 15 units and each unit has its own divided chapters, altogether consisting of 85 chapters. Unit I is an introduction to physiology consisting of 3 chapters: The cell and general physiology. Unit II addresses membrane physiology, nerve, and muscle, consisting of 5 chapters. Unit VIII has 2 chapters addressing to aviation, space, and deep sea diving physiology. It has a section on hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Units IX, X, and XI concern the physiology of the nervous system consisting of 17 chapters which elegantly review different aspects of the human nervous system. All topics discussed are relevant to daily practicing physician/scientist. One example is the important role of thyroid hormone on the growth and development of the brain during fetal, neonatal, and infantile periods, which needs to be emphasized and remembered because of its grave consequences resulting in cretinism.read more

Increased Arterial Blood Pressure and Vascular Remodeling in Mice Lacking Salt-Inducible Kinase 1 (SIK1)
Alejandro M. Bertorello,Nuno Pires,Bruno Igreja,Maria João Pinho,Emina Vorkapic,Dick Wågsäter,Johannes Wikström,Margareta Behrendt,Anders Hamsten,Per Eriksson,Patrício Soares-da-Silva,Laura Brion +11 more
TL;DR: Vascular SIK1 activation might represent a novel mechanism involved in the prevention of high blood pressure development triggered by high-salt intake through the modulation of the contractile phenotype of VSMCs via transforming growth factor-&bgr;1-signaling inhibition.
Journal ArticleDOI
ZnO-based micromotors fueled by CO2: the first example of self-reorientation-induced biomimetic chemotaxis
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that synthetic ZnO-based Janus micromotors can be powered by the alternative biocompatible fuel of CO2, and the first example of self-reorientation-induced biomimetic chemotaxis using them is provided, which opens a gate to developing intelligent micro/nanomotors powered by, and sensitive to, biOCompatible atmospheric or endogenous gaseous chemicals for biomedical and environmental applications.

Variability in phase and amplitude of diurnal rhythms is related to variation of mood in bipolar and borderline personality disorder
Oliver Carr,Kate E. A. Saunders,Kate E. A. Saunders,Athanasios Tsanas,Athanasios Tsanas,Amy C. Bilderbeck,Niclas Palmius,John R. Geddes,John R. Geddes,Russell G. Foster,Guy M. Goodwin,Guy M. Goodwin,M. De Vos +12 more
TL;DR: BPD is linked more than currently believed with a disorder of diurnal rhythm; in both BPD and BD reducing the variability of sleep phase may be a way to reduce variability of subjective mood.

Impact of clear fluid fasting on pulmonary aspiration in children undergoing general anesthesia: Results of the German prospective multicenter observational (NiKs) study.
Christiane E. Beck,Diana Rudolph,Christoph Mahn,Alexander Etspüler,Michael Korf,Matthias Lüthke,Ehrenfried Schindler,Ehrenfried Schindler,Susanne Päukert,Almut Trapp,Johanna H. A. M. Megens,Francesca Oppitz,Gregor Badelt,Katharina Röher,Arka Genähr,Gordon Fink,Lutz Müller‐Lobeck,Karin Becke‐Jakob,Julius Z. Wermelt,Dietmar Boethig,Christoph Eich,Robert Sümpelmann +21 more
TL;DR: A preliminary national audit of real fasting times including 3324 children showed that the fasting times for clear fluids and light meals were frequently shorter than recommended in current guidelines, but the sample size was too small for subgroup analyses.

A framework designation for the assessment of urban ecological risks
TL;DR: Wang et al. as mentioned in this paper defined urban ecological risks as adverse effects and possibility of impacts on urban ecosystem services resulting from urbanization, and established an indicator system to identify, assess, and manage urban ecological risk.
