TLDR
The combined treatment of Cd-exposed animals with Se and Zn assured a more significant decrease in plasma and testicular Cd concentrations and a more efficient protection against the observed testicular damage as evidenced by the total prevention of both Se andZn deprivation and by the entire restoration of the sperm motility and the testicular antioxidant status.

Protective effects of selenium against cadmium induced hematological disturbances, immunosuppressive, oxidative stress and hepatorenal damage in rats.

TL;DR: Selenium in combination with cadmium, significantly improved the elevation of serum IL-1β, IL-6, TNF α,IL-10 and malondialdehyde in addition to enhancing the antioxidant enzyme activities of GSH, CAT, GPx and SOD; selenium has shown promising effects against Cd toxicity.
Journal ArticleDOI

The environment and male reproduction: The effect of cadmium exposure on reproductive function and its implication in fertility.

TL;DR: The current review outlines epidemiological observational findings from environmental and occupational exposure in humans, and reports experimental studies in humans and animals, with a focus on the pathogenetic mechanisms of cadmium toxicity.
Journal ArticleDOI

Roles of reactive oxygen species in the spermatogenesis regulation.

TL;DR: This chapter sets out the major pathways of testis generation, the metabolism of ROS, and highlights the transcriptional regulation by steroid receptors of antioxidant stress enzymes and their functional implications.

A rapid and sensitive method for the quantitation of microgram quantities of protein utilizing the principle of protein-dye binding

TL;DR: This assay is very reproducible and rapid with the dye binding process virtually complete in approximately 2 min with good color stability for 1 hr with little or no interference from cations such as sodium or potassium nor from carbohydrates such as sucrose.
Book ChapterDOI

Microsomal lipid peroxidation.

TL;DR: This chapter discusses microsomal lipid peroxidation, a complex process known to occur in both plants and animals that involves the formation and propagation of lipid radicals, the uptake of oxygen, a rearrangement of the double bonds in unsaturated lipids, and the eventual destruction of membrane lipids.
Journal ArticleDOI

Involvement of the Superoxide Anion Radical in the Autoxidation of Pyrogallol and a Convenient Assay for Superoxide Dismutase

TL;DR: The autoxidation of pyrogallol was investigated in the presence of EDTA in the pH range 7.9–10.6, indicating an almost total dependence on the participation of the superoxide anion radical, O2·−, in the reaction.
Journal ArticleDOI

A spectrophotometric method for measuring the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide by catalase.

TL;DR: A quantitative, spectrophotometric technique for following the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide has been developed for routine studies of catalase kinetics and appears to give lower values forCatalase activity than do titration techniques.
Journal ArticleDOI

The importance of selenium to human health

TL;DR: Selenium is needed for the proper functioning of the immune system, and appears to be a key nutrient in counteracting the development of virulence and inhibiting HIV progression to AIDS.
