Marine litter within the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive
TLDR
The general strategy in support to the implementation of MSFD for marine litter includes various aspects such as scientific background, monitoring strategies and protocols, definition of good environmental status and targets and support to management policies.Abstract:
One of the most evident changes in the last half-century is the ubiquity and abundance of litter in the marine environment. The EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD, 2008/56/EC) established a framework within which EU Member States shall take action to achieve the good environmental status (GES) of their marine waters by 2020. Amongst the 11 MSFD qualitative descriptors, Descriptor 10 (D 10) concerns marine litter. Here we report the general strategy in support to the implementation of MSFD for marine litter. It includes various aspects such as scientific background, monitoring strategies and protocols, definition of good environmental status and targets and support to management policies.read more

Accumulation of marine microplastics along a trophic gradient as determined by an agent-based model
TL;DR: It is shown that trophic uptake plays an important role in increasing plastic present in filter feeders, especially when consumption of the plastic does not reduce its overall abundance in the water column (e.g. in areas with high water flow such as estuaries).

TL;DR: In this paper , the presence of microplastics in sediment, water, and benthic organisms (foraminifera) of a marine cave in the Gulf of Orosei (Sardinia, Italy) was investigated for the first time.

Distribution and characterization of microplastics in marine sediments from the Montenegrin coast
TL;DR: In this paper , the authors monitor the abundance, distribution, and sources of microplastics and identify present polymers in the surface sediment of the Montenegrin coast, as well as comparison with previous research.

Litter in the Mediterranean Sea
TL;DR: In the Mediterranean Sea human activities generate considerable amounts of waste, and quantities are increasing, although they vary between countries as mentioned in this paper, and the Barcelona convention with its Regional Action is coordinating the monitoring of marine litter and support the implementation of reduction measures.

Accumulation and fragmentation of plastic debris in global environments.
TL;DR: Global plastics production and the accumulation of plastic waste are documented, showing that trends in mega- and macro-plastic accumulation rates are no longer uniformly increasing and that the average size of plastic particles in the environment seems to be decreasing.

TL;DR: Model calculations and experimental observations consistently show that polyethylene accumulates more organic contaminants than other plastics such as polypropylene and polyvinyl chloride, and PCBs could transfer from contaminated plastics to streaked shearwater chicks.
