Abstract
One of the most evident changes in the last half-century is the ubiquity and abundance of litter in the marine environment. The EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD, 2008/56/EC) established a framework within which EU Member States shall take action to achieve the good environmental status (GES) of their marine waters by 2020. Amongst the 11 MSFD qualitative descriptors, Descriptor 10 (D 10) concerns marine litter. Here we report the general strategy in support to the implementation of MSFD for marine litter. It includes various aspects such as scientific background, monitoring strategies and protocols, definition of good environmental status and targets and support to management policies.

Microplastics in freshwater systems: A review of the emerging threats, identification of knowledge gaps and prioritisation of research needs

TL;DR: The issue of microplastics in freshwater systems is reviewed to summarise current understanding, identify knowledge gaps and suggest future research priorities.

Synthetic fibers in atmospheric fallout: A source of microplastics in the environment?

TL;DR: The atmospheric fallout of microplastics was investigated in two different urban and sub-urban sites and a rough estimation was shown showing that between 3 and 10 tons of fibers are deposited by atmospheric fallout at the scale of the Parisian agglomeration every year.

Microplastics in freshwater systems: A review on occurrence, environmental effects, and methods for microplastics detection.

TL;DR: There is still no universal accepted quantification and qualification tools of microplastics in fresh waters, and more work is anticipated to obtain accurate information on microplastic in freshwater, which can then be used for the better assessment of the environmental risk.

The European Union and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive: Continuing the Development of European Ocean Use Management

TL;DR: The Marine Strategy Framework Directive as discussed by the authors provides a plan of action with designated responsibilities and obligations and a schedule that is to be adhered to by member states and the European Commission, which represents a significant step in the European endeavor to advance ocean use management and sets the stage for future development of European marine policy.

Methods for evaluating debris on the deep sea floor

TL;DR: In this paper, the distribution and abundance of larger marine debris were investigated using four different methods (bottom trawling, pole traweling, videophotography and submersibles) during oceanographic cruises undertaken from November 1993 to July 1998.
