The general strategy in support to the implementation of MSFD for marine litter includes various aspects such as scientific background, monitoring strategies and protocols, definition of good environmental status and targets and support to management policies.
Abstract
One of the most evident changes in the last half-century is the ubiquity and abundance of litter in the marine environment. The EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD, 2008/56/EC) established a framework within which EU Member States shall take action to achieve the good environmental status (GES) of their marine waters by 2020. Amongst the 11 MSFD qualitative descriptors, Descriptor 10 (D 10) concerns marine litter. Here we report the general strategy in support to the implementation of MSFD for marine litter. It includes various aspects such as scientific background, monitoring strategies and protocols, definition of good environmental status and targets and support to management policies.

Influence of microplastics on the toxicity of cephalexin to early juveniles of the common goby (Pomatoschistus microps) in relation to temperature change

TL;DR: The main goals of the present study were to investigate the toxic effects of cephalexin, alone and in combination with microplastics, on wild juveniles of the common goby (Pomatoschistus microps) and if a 5oC raise of water temperature modulates the chemically induced toxicity.

Investigation of microplastic contamination in the sediments of Noyyal River- southern India

TL;DR: In this paper , a catchmentwide pattern of microplastic contamination, classified by type, Shape, size, and color, in channel bed sediments from 15 sites in Coimbatore's urban river catchments was presented.

First report of marine debris in Car Nicobar, a remote oceanic Island in the Nicobar archipelago, Bay of Bengal

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors conducted a survey on Car Nicobar island to study the prevalence of marine debris and found that a total of 1438 debris items were recorded from the surveys of which plastic debris was found dominant (83.72%).

Integrated approach for marine litter pollution assessment in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea: Information from bottom-trawl fishing and plastic ingestion in deep-sea fish.

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors provided new information on the composition, density and origin of seafloor macrolitter as well as on plastic ingestion in deep-sea fish from bottom-trawling bycatch in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea.

TL;DR: It is shown that microscopic plastic fragments and fibers are also widespread in the marine environment and may persist for centuries.

Accumulation and fragmentation of plastic debris in global environments.

TL;DR: Global plastics production and the accumulation of plastic waste are documented, showing that trends in mega- and macro-plastic accumulation rates are no longer uniformly increasing and that the average size of plastic particles in the environment seems to be decreasing.
