The general strategy in support to the implementation of MSFD for marine litter includes various aspects such as scientific background, monitoring strategies and protocols, definition of good environmental status and targets and support to management policies.
Abstract
One of the most evident changes in the last half-century is the ubiquity and abundance of litter in the marine environment. The EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD, 2008/56/EC) established a framework within which EU Member States shall take action to achieve the good environmental status (GES) of their marine waters by 2020. Amongst the 11 MSFD qualitative descriptors, Descriptor 10 (D 10) concerns marine litter. Here we report the general strategy in support to the implementation of MSFD for marine litter. It includes various aspects such as scientific background, monitoring strategies and protocols, definition of good environmental status and targets and support to management policies.

Abundance of microplastics in the gastrointestinal tracts of the eelpout (Zoacres viviparous L.) collected in Roskilde Fjord, Denmark: Implications for use as a monitoring species under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive

TL;DR: In this article, the content of microplastic pollution in the viviparous blenny Zoarces veliparus (eelpout) sampled in Roskilde Fjord, Denmark, and evaluated whether the eelpouts could serve as a relevant indicator organism for MP pollution in relation to monitoring under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD).

Abundance and Composition of Marine Litter on the Seafloor of the Gulf of Sant Jordi (Western Mediterranean Sea)

TL;DR: In this paper, the abundance and composition of marine litter in the Gulf of Sant Jordi (Catalonia, Spain) were analyzed by a fishing trawler operating from the port of L'Ametlla de Mar; 56 hauls were performed between July and September 2018.

General macro-litter as a proxy for fishing lines, hooks and nets entrapping beach-nesting birds: Implications for clean-ups.

TL;DR: In this article , the accumulation pattern of both general beach litter and fishing lines, hooks and nets was analyzed on four central Italy beaches during a winter period, during which the entrapping litter was very low (<2.5 % of the general litter) and appeared directly correlated to the overall litter density, suggesting that an increase in general macro-litter should alarm those involved in the conservation of entanglement-sensitive bird species, such as plovers, suggest that they should implement highfrequency clean-up activities aimed at removing it.

Temporal changes of plastic litter and associated encrusting biota: Evidence from Central Italy (Mediterranean Sea).

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors investigated the temporal changes from spring to summer of the stranded litter and the composition of plastic encrusting biota along an Italian beach, highlighting a higher quantity of litter (average value 1510.67 ± 581.27 items) in spring, particularly plastic material with a composition driven by currents, winds and waves transported from rivers to sea.

TL;DR: It is shown that microscopic plastic fragments and fibers are also widespread in the marine environment and may persist for centuries.

Accumulation and fragmentation of plastic debris in global environments.

TL;DR: Global plastics production and the accumulation of plastic waste are documented, showing that trends in mega- and macro-plastic accumulation rates are no longer uniformly increasing and that the average size of plastic particles in the environment seems to be decreasing.
