Marine litter within the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive

TLDR
The general strategy in support to the implementation of MSFD for marine litter includes various aspects such as scientific background, monitoring strategies and protocols, definition of good environmental status and targets and support to management policies.
Abstract
One of the most evident changes in the last half-century is the ubiquity and abundance of litter in the marine environment. The EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD, 2008/56/EC) established a framework within which EU Member States shall take action to achieve the good environmental status (GES) of their marine waters by 2020. Amongst the 11 MSFD qualitative descriptors, Descriptor 10 (D 10) concerns marine litter. Here we report the general strategy in support to the implementation of MSFD for marine litter. It includes various aspects such as scientific background, monitoring strategies and protocols, definition of good environmental status and targets and support to management policies.

How can we test plastic pollution perceptions and behavior? A feasibility study with Danish children participating in "the Mass Experiment".

TL;DR: The Mass Experiment (ME) as mentioned in this paper was the largest citizen science activity on plastic pollution targeting young people in Denmark, with more than 57,000 students signed up for ME and developed a questionnaire to study the perceptions and behaviors of the students.

How can we test plastic pollution perceptions and behavior? A feasibility study with Danish children participating in “the Mass Experiment”

TL;DR: The Mass Experiment (ME) as discussed by the authors was the largest citizen science activity on plastic pollution targeting young people in Denmark, with more than 57,000 students signed up for ME and developed a voluntary and anonymous questionnaire to study the perceptions and behaviors of the students.

An integrative assessment of the plastic debris load in the Mediterranean Sea.

TL;DR: In this paper , an extensive sampling of plastic debris was conducted in seven ecoregions, from Gibraltar to Lebanon, with the aim of providing reliable estimates of regional differences in floating plastic loads and plastic characteristics.

The development and application of advanced analytical methods in microplastics contamination detection: A critical review.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors reviewed the derivation, transport, and classification of microplastics and highlighted the harmfulness of micro-plastics which would bring microplastic pollution to the environment and potential damage to organisms, and various analytical methods were classified into thermal analytical method, spectral analytical approach, and other analytical methods based on detection principles.

Accumulation and fragmentation of plastic debris in global environments.

TL;DR: Global plastics production and the accumulation of plastic waste are documented, showing that trends in mega- and macro-plastic accumulation rates are no longer uniformly increasing and that the average size of plastic particles in the environment seems to be decreasing.
