The general strategy in support to the implementation of MSFD for marine litter includes various aspects such as scientific background, monitoring strategies and protocols, definition of good environmental status and targets and support to management policies.
Abstract
One of the most evident changes in the last half-century is the ubiquity and abundance of litter in the marine environment. The EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD, 2008/56/EC) established a framework within which EU Member States shall take action to achieve the good environmental status (GES) of their marine waters by 2020. Amongst the 11 MSFD qualitative descriptors, Descriptor 10 (D 10) concerns marine litter. Here we report the general strategy in support to the implementation of MSFD for marine litter. It includes various aspects such as scientific background, monitoring strategies and protocols, definition of good environmental status and targets and support to management policies.

Methods of Analyzing Microsized Plastics in the Environment

TL;DR: Several methods have been developed for the sampling, extraction, purification, identification, and quantification of microplastics in complex environmental matrices as discussed by the authors, and the best strategies for microplastic analysis by comparing the strengths and limitations of each identification method.

What is in our seas? Assessing anthropogenic litter on the seafloor of the central Mediterranean Sea.

TL;DR: This study provides a snapshot of the current situation of littering in the central Mediterranean Sea and represents a solid baseline against which the effectiveness of current and future mitigation strategies of the litter impact on marine environment can be measured.

Adoption and diffusion of marine litter clean-up technologies across European seas: Legal, institutional and financial drivers and barriers

TL;DR: The research on marine litter in Italy and Greece is mostly funded through European research programmes and funding from the respective Ministries of Environment, and sometimes through private donations as mentioned in this paper, and is typically carried out through campaigns led and organised by environmental NGOs employing volunteers, also sometimes funded by private donors.

Accumulation and fragmentation of plastic debris in global environments.

TL;DR: Global plastics production and the accumulation of plastic waste are documented, showing that trends in mega- and macro-plastic accumulation rates are no longer uniformly increasing and that the average size of plastic particles in the environment seems to be decreasing.
