MEGA6: Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis Version 6.0

TLDR
An advanced version of the Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis software, which currently contains facilities for building sequence alignments, inferring phylogenetic histories, and conducting molecular evolutionary analysis, is released, which enables the inference of timetrees, as it implements the RelTime method for estimating divergence times for all branching points in a phylogeny.
Abstract
We announce the release of an advanced version of the Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis (MEGA) software, which currently contains facilities for building sequence alignments, inferring phylogenetic histories, and conducting molecular evolutionary analysis. In version 6.0, MEGA now enables the inference of timetrees, as it implements the RelTime method for estimating divergence times for all branching points in a phylogeny. A new Timetree Wizard in MEGA6 facilitates this timetree inference by providing a graphical user interface (GUI) to specify the phylogeny and calibration constraints step-by-step. This version also contains enhanced algorithms to search for the optimal trees under evolutionary criteria and implements a more advanced memory management that can double the size of sequence data sets to which MEGA can be applied. Both GUI and command-line versions of MEGA6 can be downloaded from www.megasoftware.net free of charge.

Development and application of a novel genome-wide SNP array reveals domestication history in soybean.

TL;DR: A high-throughput NJAU 355 K SoySNP array is developed and used to study the genetic variation patterns in 367 soybean accessions and a strong linkage disequilibrium region on chromosome 20 was found to be significantly correlated with seed weight in cultivated soybeans.

Saccharicrinis carchari sp. nov., isolated from a shark, and emended descriptions of the genus Saccharicrinis and Saccharicrinis fermentans.

TL;DR: A phylogenetic tree, based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, showed that strain SS12(T) and Saccharicrinis fermentans DSM 9555(T%) formed a distinct cluster within the family Marinilabiliaceae.

Pleistocene North African genomes link Near Eastern and sub-Saharan African human populations

TL;DR: Genomic data from seven 15,000-year-old modern humans attributed to the Iberomaurusian culture from Morocco are presented, finding a genetic affinity with early Holocene Near Easterners, best represented by Levantine Natufians, suggesting a pre-agricultural connection between Africa and the Near East.

A phylogenomic and molecular marker based proposal for the division of the genus Borrelia into two genera: the emended genus Borrelia containing only the members of the relapsing fever Borrelia, and the genus Borreliella gen. nov. containing the members of the Lyme disease Borrelia (Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex)

TL;DR: In this article, the authors carried out comparative genomic analyses on protein sequences from 38 Borrelia genomes to identify molecular markers in the forms of conserved signature inserts/deletions (CSIs) that are specifically found in the homologues, and conserved signatures proteins (CSPs) which are uniquely present in Borrelias species.

The Neutral Theory of Molecular Evolution

Motoo Kimura
TL;DR: The neutral theory as discussed by the authors states that the great majority of evolutionary changes at the molecular level are caused not by Darwinian selection but by random drift of selectively neutral mutants, which has caused controversy ever since.
