Research on aerosol sources and chemical composition: Past, current and emerging issues

TLDR
In spite of considerable progress in recent years, a quantitative and predictive understanding of atmospheric aerosol sources, chemical composition, transformation processes and environmental effects is still rather limited, and therefore represents a major research challenge in atmospheric science as discussed by the authors.

Characterization of operating conditions of two residential wood combustion appliances

TL;DR: In this paper, the main physical characteristics and operating conditions of a fireplace and a stove commonly used in Portugal for domestic heating based on biomass combustion are presented, where the fuel used was wood from pine (softwood) and eucalyptus (hardwood).
Journal ArticleDOI

Source apportionment of size segregated fine/ultrafine particle by PMF in Beijing

TL;DR: In this article, the number concentration of atmospheric PM (particulate material) is more important than the mass concentration, considering the adverse health effects to human body, the size distribution and the possible sources of number concentrations were examined using EPA PMF (positive matrix factorization) model.

The elemental composition and origin of fine ambient particles in the largest Polish conurbation: first results from the short-term winter campaign

TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed 24 elements with an Epsilon 5 spectrometer (PANalytical) and compared the results with the results of research conducted earlier in Poland and other parts of the world.

A neural network aerosol-typing algorithm based on lidar data

TL;DR: A Neural Network Aerosol Typing Algorithm Based on Lidar Data (NATALI) was developed to estimate the most probable aerosol type from a set of multispectral lidar data, and blind tests on EARLINET data samples showed the capability of NATALI to retrieve the aerosoltype from a large variety of data, with different levels of quality and physical content.

Vertical Variation of PM2.5 Mass and Chemical Composition, Particle Size Distribution, NO2, and BTEX at a High Rise Building

TL;DR: The findings emphasize the need to include vertical variations of urban air pollutants when evaluating population exposure and associated health effects, especially in relation to some traffic related pollutants and particle metrics.

Climate change 2007: the physical science basis

TL;DR: The first volume of the IPCC's Fourth Assessment Report as mentioned in this paper was published in 2007 and covers several topics including the extensive range of observations now available for the atmosphere and surface, changes in sea level, assesses the paleoclimatic perspective, climate change causes both natural and anthropogenic, and climate models for projections of global climate.

Climate change 2001: the scientific basis

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present an overview of the climate system and its dynamics, including observed climate variability and change, the carbon cycle, atmospheric chemistry and greenhouse gases, and their direct and indirect effects.

Atmospheric chemistry and physics: from air pollution to climate change.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a model for the chemistry of the Troposphere of the atmosphere and describe the properties of the Atmospheric Aqueous phase of single aerosol particles.
