Reticular synthesis and the design of new materials

TLDR
This work has shown that highly porous frameworks held together by strong metal–oxygen–carbon bonds and with exceptionally large surface area and capacity for gas storage have been prepared and their pore metrics systematically varied and functionalized.
Abstract
The long-standing challenge of designing and constructing new crystalline solid-state materials from molecular building blocks is just beginning to be addressed with success. A conceptual approach that requires the use of secondary building units to direct the assembly of ordered frameworks epitomizes this process: we call this approach reticular synthesis. This chemistry has yielded materials designed to have predetermined structures, compositions and properties. In particular, highly porous frameworks held together by strong metal-oxygen-carbon bonds and with exceptionally large surface area and capacity for gas storage have been prepared and their pore metrics systematically varied and functionalized.

Bidirectional chemo-switching of spin state in a microporous framework.

TL;DR: In situ magnetic measurements following guest vapor injection show that most guest molecules transform 1 from the low-spin state to the high-spin (HS) state, whereas CS(2) uniquely causes the reverse HS-to-LS transition.

Unprecedented high-temperature CO 2 selectivity in N 2 -phobic nanoporous covalent organic polymers

TL;DR: Azo-bridged, nitrogen-rich, aromatic, water stable, nanoporous covalent organic polymers, which can be synthesized by catalyst-free direct coupling of aromatic nitro and amine moieties under basic conditions are reported, displaying an unprecedented increase in CO(2)/N(2) selectivity with increasing temperature.

Exceptional framework flexibility and sorption behavior of a multifunctional porous cuprous triazolate framework.

TL;DR: By virtue of the kinetically controlled flexibility and hydrophobic pore surface, MAF-2 can adsorb large amounts of small organic molecules but excludes H2O, and can separate benzene and cyclohexane efficiently.

Magnetic nanoporous coordination polymers

TL;DR: The use of organic molecules as an alternative strategy for achieving new nanoporous metal-organic materials has become an attractive prospect as mentioned in this paper, and the use of transition metal ions opens the possibility to obtain nanoporous materials with additional electrical, optical or magnetic properties.

TL;DR: Metal-organic framework (MOF-5), a prototype of a new class of porous materials and one that is constructed from octahedral Zn-O-C clusters and benzene links, was used to demonstrate that its three-dimensional porous system can be functionalized with the organic groups and can be expanded with the long molecular struts biphenyl, tetrahydropyrene, pyrene, and terphenyl.
