TLDR
In this paper, a total deformation theory of plasticity, in conjunction with two hardening stress-strain relations, is used to determine the dominant singularity at the tip of a crack in a tension field.
Abstract
D istributions of stress occurring at the tip of a crack in a tension field are presented for both plane stress and plane strain. A total deformation theory of plasticity, in conjunction with two hardening stress-strain relations, is used. For applied stress sufficiently low such that the plastic zone is very small relative to the crack length, the dominant singularity can be completely determined with the aid of a path-independent line integral recently given by rice (1967). The amplitude of the tensile stress singularity ahead of the crack is found to be larger in plane strain than in plane stress.

The mechanics of self-similar and self-affine fractal cracks

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied the structure of stress and strain singularity at the tip of a fractal crack, which can be self-similar or self-affine, and the three classical modes of fracture and the fourth mode of fracture are discussed for fractal cracks in two-dimensional and three-dimensional solid bodies.

Characterization of crack tip stress fields in test specimens using mode mixity parameters

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyzed the combined effect of mode mixity, specimen geometry and relative crack length on the plastic stress intensity factor for a complete range of mixed modes of loading between mode I and mode II.

Creep crack growth behaviour of Type 316H steels and proposed modifications to standard testing and analysis methods

TL;DR: In this article, a change in cracking mode from ductile to brittle intergranular fracture was observed with increasing test duration and the observed behaviour has then been compared with existing creep crack growth rate data for this material.

Role of plasticity on interface crack initiation from a free edge and propagation in a nano-component

TL;DR: In this paper, the role of plasticity on interface crack initiation from a free edge and crack propagation in a nano-component was investigated by a proposed nano-cantilever bend method using a specimen consisting of ductile Cu and brittle Si.

The Shadow Optical Method of Caustics

TL;DR: The shadow optical method of caustics is a relatively new experimental technique in stress strain analysis as discussed by the authors, which was originally introduced by Manogg (1964) for investigating crack tip stress intensifications.

Local yielding and extension of a crack under plane stress

TL;DR: In this article, the size of locally yielded regions, the stress distribution, and displacements attending a crack in tension under plane stress have been calculated by extending the work of Dugdale and others.

Contained plastic deformation near cracks and notches under longitudinal shear

TL;DR: In this paper, an exact linear elastic-perfectly plastic solution for the problem of sharp notch (or, when the notch angle is zero, a crack) in a plane of finite width subjected to anti-plane stresses inducing a stress and deformation state of longitudinal shear is presented.
