In this paper, a total deformation theory of plasticity, in conjunction with two hardening stress-strain relations, is used to determine the dominant singularity at the tip of a crack in a tension field.
Abstract
D istributions of stress occurring at the tip of a crack in a tension field are presented for both plane stress and plane strain. A total deformation theory of plasticity, in conjunction with two hardening stress-strain relations, is used. For applied stress sufficiently low such that the plastic zone is very small relative to the crack length, the dominant singularity can be completely determined with the aid of a path-independent line integral recently given by rice (1967). The amplitude of the tensile stress singularity ahead of the crack is found to be larger in plane strain than in plane stress.

Significance of crack opening displacement and crack tip plastic strain energy in fracture initiation

TL;DR: In this paper, the development of an intense strain region, formed locally at a blunting crack tip, and the equivalent plastic strain distribution within it were investigated in terms of crack opening displacement δt by means of the recrystallization technique.

Effect of precipitate volume fraction on fracture toughness of extruded Mg–Zn alloys

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of precipitate volume fraction on fracture toughness was examined for four kinds of extruded Mg-X at.% Zn binary alloys (X = 1.9, 2.4, 3.0, and 3.4) with fine grain sizes of 1-3 μm and fine sphere-shaped precipitates of 50-60 nm.

Evidence of shear ligament toughening in TiAl-base alloys

TL;DR: In this article, various aspects of the shear ligament-toughhening mechanism are evaluated by performing critical experiments and the experimental results and model calculations indicate that the resistance-curve fracture behavior in lamellar TiAl-base alloys is indeed a manifestation of ligament toughening.

Effects of plastic anisotropy on crack-tip behaviour

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of plastic anisotropy on crack-tip blunting and on the near-tip stress and strain fields is analyzed numerically for homogeneous cracks.

Contained plastic deformation near cracks and notches under longitudinal shear

TL;DR: In this paper, an exact linear elastic-perfectly plastic solution for the problem of sharp notch (or, when the notch angle is zero, a crack) in a plane of finite width subjected to anti-plane stresses inducing a stress and deformation state of longitudinal shear is presented.
