Sleep and Memory Consolidation Dysfunction in Psychiatric Disorders: Evidence for the Involvement of Extracellular Matrix Molecules.
TLDR
In this paper, the authors review the evidence for sleep and memory consolidation dysfunction in psychiatric disorders and aging in the context of current evidence pointing to the involvement of extracellular matrix molecules in these processes.Abstract:
Sleep disturbances and memory dysfunction are key characteristics across psychiatric disorders. Recent advances have revealed insight into the role of sleep in memory consolidation, pointing to key overlap between memory consolidation processes and structural and molecular abnormalities in psychiatric disorders. Ongoing research regarding the molecular mechanisms involved in memory consolidation has the potential to identify therapeutic targets for memory dysfunction in psychiatric disorders and aging. Recent evidence from our group and others points to extracellular matrix molecules, including chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans and their endogenous proteases, as molecules that may underlie synaptic dysfunction in psychiatric disorders and memory consolidation during sleep. These molecules may provide a therapeutic targets for decreasing strength of reward memories in addiction and traumatic memories in PTSD, as well as restoring deficits in memory consolidation in schizophrenia and aging. We review the evidence for sleep and memory consolidation dysfunction in psychiatric disorders and aging in the context of current evidence pointing to the involvement of extracellular matrix molecules in these processes.read more

Ameliorating schizophrenia-like symptoms in vasopressin deficient male Brattleboro rat by chronic antipsychotic treatment.
TL;DR: In this article, the effects of marketed antipsychotics are similar in di/di rats to those seen in human schizophrenic patients, and aripiprazole has the most favorable profile in this regard.

Benchmarking brain organoid recapitulation of fetal corticogenesis
TL;DR: In this paper , a longitudinal transcriptomic analysis of CBO revealed a two-step differentiation composed of a fast-evolving phase, corresponding to the appearance of the main cell populations of the cortex, followed by a slow-evolved one characterized by milder transcriptional changes.

Is paradoxical sleep setting up innate and acquired complex sensorimotor and adaptive behaviours?: A proposed function based on literature review
E. Casaglia,Pierre-Hervé Luppi +1 more
TL;DR: The discovery that cortical activation during paradoxical sleep is restricted to a few limbic cortices activated by the lateral supramammillary nucleus and the claustrum nicely supports the findings recently obtained showing that neuronal reactivation occurs during Paradoxical sleep in these structures, and induces both memory consolidation of important memory and forgetting of less relevant ones.

TL;DR: It is shown that microglia actively engulf synaptic material and play a major role in synaptic pruning during postnatal development in mice and this work suggests that deficits in microglian function may contribute to synaptic abnormalities seen in some neurodevelopmental disorders.

Reactivation of hippocampal ensemble memories during sleep.
TL;DR: In this paper, large ensembles of hippocampal "place cells" were recorded from three rats during spatial behavioral tasks and in slow-wave sleep preceding and following these behaviors, showing an increased tendency to fire together during subsequent sleep, in comparison to sleep episodes preceding the behavioral tasks.
