TLDR
The findings suggest that the previously asserted direct effect of structural differentiation on ambidexterity operates through informal senior team and formal organizational integration mechanisms, and contributes to a greater clarity and better understanding of how organizations may effectively pursue exploration and exploitation simultaneously to achieve ambideXterity.
Abstract
textPrior studies have emphasized that structural attributes are crucial to simultaneously pursuing exploration and exploitation, yet our understanding of antecedents of ambidexterity is still limited. Structural differentiation can help ambidextrous organizations to maintain multiple inconsistent and conflicting demands; however, differentiated exploratory and exploitative activities need to mobilized, coordinated, integrated, and applied. Based on this idea, we delineate formal and informal senior team integration mechanisms (i.e. contingency rewards and social integration) and formal and informal organizational integration mechanisms (i.e. cross-functional interfaces and connectedness) and examine how they mediate the relationship between structural differentiation and ambidexterity. Overall, our findings suggest that the previously asserted direct effect of structural differentiation on ambidexterity operates through informal senior team (i.e. senior team social integration) and formal organizational (i.e. cross-functional interfaces) integration mechanisms. Through this richer explanation and empirical assessment, we contribute to a greater clarity and better understanding of how organizations may effectively pursue exploration and exploitation simultaneously to achieve ambidexterity.

Pathways for Balancing Exploration and Exploitation in Innovations: A Review and Expansion of Ambidexterity Theory

TL;DR: In this paper, the inherent tension between innovation, as a means to adapt to environmental change, and continuing to do what one does well and what current customers appreciate is discussed. And the authors propose a solution to resolve this tension.

Organisational ambidexterity: a literature review using bibliometric methods

TL;DR: In this article, a decision was made to analyse a total of 283 research papers which appeared after the publication in the journal California Management Review in the summer of 1996 of the seminal work by Tushman and O'Reilly III entitled 'Ambidextrous Organizations: Managing Evolutionary and Revolutionary Change', where these authors suggested that organisations need to explore and exploit simultaneously if they want to be ambidextrial.

Brokerage and balance: Creating an effective organizational interface for product modularization in multinational R&D

TL;DR: It is found that three elements of an organizational interface were established through a process composed of three phases in HomeTech R&D: regional concentration, establishing a module pool, and creating architecture leader posts, which enriched the organizational interface concept by highlighting the combination of elements.

Absorptive capacity, innovation cooperation and human capital. Evidence from 3 European countries

TL;DR: In this article, the authors extend the analysis of the firm's absorptive capacity (AC) by taking stock of its manifold nature and show that the transformation of AC into actual innovation is favored by the human capital of a firm, while it is actually hampered by socialisation mechanisms of an organisational nature.
