Nonthermal Radiation from Clusters of Galaxies: The Role of Merger Shocks in Particle Acceleration
Stefano Gabici,Pasquale Blasi +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigate the acceleration of protons and electrons in the shocks that originated during mergers of clusters of galaxies, where the Fermi acceleration may work, and conclude that efficient particle acceleration, resulting in nonthermal spectra that compare with observations, occurs mainly in minor mergers, namely, mergers between clusters with very different masses.
Journal ArticleDOI
Energy spectrum of particles accelerated in relativistic collisionless shocks.
Uri Keshet,Eli Waxman +1 more
TL;DR: The spectrum-anisotropy connection is useful for testing numerical studies and constraining anisotropic diffusion results, and suggests that the spectrum is highly sensitive to the form of the diffusion function for particles traveling along the shock front.
Journal ArticleDOI
Diffusive Shock Acceleration and Magnetic Field Amplification
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discuss various theories on how magnetic field amplification can proceed in the presence of a cosmic ray population, on both short and long length scales, cosmic ray streaming can induce instabilities that act to amplify the magnetic field.
Journal ArticleDOI
Blazar gamma-rays, shock acceleration, and the extragalactic background light
TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that if particles in blazar jets are accelerated at relativistic shocks, then GAMMA-ray spectra with indices less than 1.5 can be produced.
Journal ArticleDOI
Analytic Solution for Nonlinear Shock Acceleration in the Bohm Limit
TL;DR: In this paper, a self-consistent steady state solution for a strong shock, significantly modified by accelerated particles is obtained on the level of a kinetic description, assuming Bohm-type diffusion.
