TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed the K13-propeller sequence polymorphism in 14,037 samples collected in 59 countries in which malaria is endemic and identified 108 nonsynonymous K13 mutations, which showed marked geographic disparity in their frequency and distribution.
Journal ArticleDOI
TLR4 polymorphisms, infectious diseases, and evolutionary pressure during migration of modern humans
Bart Ferwerda,Matthew B. B. McCall,Santos Alonso,Evangelos J. Giamarellos-Bourboulis,Maria Mouktaroudi,Neskuts Izagirre,Din Syafruddin,Gibson S. Kibiki,Tudor Cristea,Anneke Hijmans,Lutz Hamann,Shoshana Israel,Gehad ElGhazali,Marita Troye-Blomberg,Oliver Kumpf,B. Maiga,Amagana Dolo,Ogobara K. Doumbo,Cornelus C. Hermsen,Anton F. H. Netea +29 more
TL;DR: Polymorphisms in TLR4 exemplify how the interaction between the authors' innate immune system and the infectious pressures in particular environments may have shaped the genetic variations and function of their immune system during the out-of-Africa migration of modern humans.
Journal ArticleDOI
Malaria in pregnancy in the Asia-Pacific region
Marcus J. Rijken,Rose McGready,Rose McGready,Machteld E. Boel,Rini Poespoprodjo,Neeru Singh,Neeru Singh,Din Syafruddin,Stephen J. Rogerson,François Nosten,François Nosten +10 more
TL;DR: When malaria in pregnancy cannot be prevented, accurate diagnosis and prompt treatment are needed to avert dangerous symptomatic disease and to reduce effects on fetuses.
Journal ArticleDOI
Increased serum hepcidin and alterations in blood iron parameters associated with asymptomatic P. falciparum and P. vivax malaria
Quirijn de Mast,Din Syafruddin,Stephan Keijmel,Teun Olde Riekerink,Oktavian Deky,Puji Budi Setia Asih,Dorine W. Swinkels,André J. A. M. van der Ven +7 more
TL;DR: Asymptomatic malarial parasitemia is associated with increased hepcidin concentrations and anemia, in the absence of a manifest acute phase response, and prolonged iron maldistribution may be an underestimated cause of anemia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Parasites resistant to the antimalarial atovaquone fail to transmit by mosquitoes
Christopher D. Goodman,Josephine E. Siregar,Josephine E. Siregar,Josephine E. Siregar,Vanessa Mollard,Joel Vega-Rodríguez,Din Syafruddin,Din Syafruddin,Hiroyuki Matsuoka,Motomichi Matsuzaki,Tomoko Toyama,Angelika Sturm,Anton Cozijnsen,Marcelo Jacobs-Lorena,Kiyoshi Kita,Kiyoshi Kita,Sangkot Marzuki,Geoffrey I. McFadden +17 more
TL;DR: Lack of transmission suggests that resistance to a commonly used antimalarial medication, atovaquone, is apparently unable to spread in the field, greatly enhancing the utility of atovaqone in malaria control.
