Journal ArticleDOI
Male sex identified by global COVID-19 meta-analysis as a risk factor for death and ITU admission.
Hannah Peckham,Nina M. de Gruijter,Charles Raine,Anna Radziszewska,Coziana Ciurtin,Lucy R. Wedderburn,Lucy R. Wedderburn,Lucy R. Wedderburn,Elizabeth C. Rosser,Kate Webb,Kate Webb,Claire T Deakin,Claire T Deakin,Claire T Deakin +13 more
TL;DR: A meta-analysis of 3,111,714 reported global cases shows that, whilst there is no difference in the proportion of males and females with confirmed COVID-19, male patients have almost three times the odds of requiring intensive treatment unit (ITU) admission and higher odds of death compared to females.
Journal ArticleDOI
Preexisting and de novo humoral immunity to SARS-CoV-2 in humans
Kevin W. Ng,Nikhil Faulkner,Georgina H. Cornish,Annachiara Rosa,Ruth Harvey,Saira Hussain,Rachel Ulferts,Christopher Earl,A.G. Wrobel,D.J. Benton,Chloe Roustan,William Bolland,Rachael Thompson,Ana Agua-Doce,Philip Hobson,Judith Heaney,Hannah Rickman,Stavroula Paraskevopoulou,Catherine F Houlihan,Kirsty Thomson,Emilie Sanchez,Gee Yen Shin,Moira J. McCoy,Peter Cherepanov,Eleni Nastouli,George Kassiotis,George Kassiotis +47 more
TL;DR: Using diverse assays for antibodies recognizing SARS-CoV-2 proteins, preexisting humoral immunity was detected and antibodies targeting the S2 subunit were particularly prevalent in children and adolescents.
Journal ArticleDOI
CD4+CD25bright Regulatory T Cells Actively Regulate Inflammation in the Joints of Patients with the Remitting Form of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis
Ismé M. de Kleer,Lucy R. Wedderburn,Leonie S. Taams,Alka Patel,Hemlata Varsani,Mark Klein,Wilco de Jager,Gisela Pugayung,Francesca Giannoni,Ger T. Rijkers,Salvatore Albani,Wietse Kuis,Berent J. Prakken +12 more
TL;DR: A markedly higher expression of CTLA-4, glucocorticoid-induced TNFR, and HLA-DR on SF CD4+CD25bright T regulatory (Treg) cells compared with their peripheral counterparts suggests that the CD4-CD25+ Treg cells may undergo maturation in the joint.
Journal ArticleDOI
Th17 plasticity in human autoimmune arthritis is driven by the inflammatory environment.
Kiran Nistala,Stuart Adams,Helen Cambrook,Simona Ursu,Biagio Olivito,Wilco de Jager,Jamie G. Evans,Rolando Cimaz,Mona Bajaj-Elliott,Lucy R. Wedderburn +9 more
TL;DR: It is proposed that the Th17 phenotype may be unstable and that Th17 cells may convert to Th17/1 and Th1 cells in human arthritis, and therefore therapies targeting the induction of Th 17 cells could also attenuate Th17 or Th1 effector populations within the inflamed joint.
Journal ArticleDOI
Dense genotyping of immune-related disease regions identifies 14 new susceptibility loci for juvenile idiopathic arthritis
Anne Hinks,Anne Hinks,J Cobb,J Cobb,Miranda C. Marion,Sampath Prahalad,Marc Sudman,John Bowes,John Bowes,Paul Martin,Paul Martin,Mary E. Comeau,Satria Sajuthi,Robert K Andrews,Milton R. Wedderburn,Patricia Woo,John F. Bohnsack,Johannes-Peter Haas,David N. Glass,Carl D. Langefeld,Wendy Thomson,Wendy Thomson,Susan D. Thompson +45 more
TL;DR: This is the largest collection of JIA cases investigated so far and provides new insight into the genetic basis of this childhood autoimmune disease, highlighting crucial pathways, including the interleukin (IL)-2 pathway, in JIA disease pathogenesis.
