Journal ArticleDOI
WNT7A and PAX6 define corneal epithelium homeostasis and pathogenesis
Hong Ouyang,Yuanchao Xue,Ying Lin,Xiaohui Zhang,Lei Xi,Sherrina Patel,Huimin Cai,Jing Luo,Meixia Zhang,Ming Zhang,Yang Yang,Gen Li,Hairi Li,Wei Jiang,Emily Yeh,Jonathan H. Lin,Michelle Pei,Jin Zhu,Guiqun Cao,Liangfang Zhang,Benjamin D. Yu,Shaochen Chen,Xiang-Dong Fu,Yizhi Liu,Kang Zhang +24 more
TL;DR: Establishment of an in vitro feeder-cell-free LSC expansion and three-dimensional corneal differentiation protocol in which the transcription factors p63 and PAX6 act together to specify LSCs is found, suggesting a central role of the WNT7A–PAX6 axis in corNEal epithelial cell fate determination, and point to a new strategy for treating corneAL surface diseases.
Journal ArticleDOI
Human Retinal Progenitor Cell Transplantation Preserves Vision
Jing Luo,Jing Luo,Petr Baranov,Sherrina Patel,Hong Ouyang,John Quach,Frances Wu,Austin Qiu,Hongrong Luo,Caroline A Hicks,Jing Zeng,Jing Zeng,Jing Zhu,Jessica Lu,Nicole Sfeir,Cindy Wen,Meixia Zhang,Victoria Reade,Sara Patel,John Sinden,Xiaodong Sun,Peter X. Shaw,Michael J. Young,Kang Zhang +23 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that the preservation of visual acuity was likely achieved through host photoreceptor rescue, and hRPC transplantation into the subretinal space of RCS rats was well tolerated, with no adverse effects such as tumor formation noted at 12 weeks after treatment.
Journal ArticleDOI
Deep-learning models for the detection and incidence prediction of chronic kidney disease and type 2 diabetes from retinal fundus images.
Kang Zhang,Xiaohong Liu,Jie Xu,Jie Xu,Jin Yuan,Wenjia Cai,Ting Chen,Kai Wang,Yuanxu Gao,Sheng Nie,Xiaodong Xu,Xiaoqi Qin,Yuandong Su,Wenqin Xu,Andrea Olvera,Kanmin Xue,Zhihuan Li,Meixia Zhang,Xiaoxi Zeng,Charlotte Zhang,Oulan Li,Edward E. Zhang,Jie Zhu,Yiming Xu,Daniel Kermany,Kaixin Zhou,Ying Pan,Shaoyun Li,Iat Fan Lai,Ying Chi,Changuang Wang,Michelle Pei,Guangxi Zang,Qi Zhang,Johnson Y.N. Lau,Dennis Lam,Xiaoguang Zou,Aizezi Wumaier,Jianquan Wang,Yin Shen,Fan Fan Hou,Ping Zhang,Tao Xu,Yong Zhou,Guangyu Wang +44 more
TL;DR: In this paper, deep learning models were used to identify chronic kidney disease and type 2 diabetes from fundus images or in combination with clinical metadata (age, sex, height, weight, body mass index and blood pressure) with areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.85-0.93.
Journal ArticleDOI
Transcription Factor PAX6 (Paired Box 6) Controls Limbal Stem Cell Lineage in Development and Disease
Gen Li,Fan Xu,Jie Zhu,Michal Krawczyk,Ying Zhang,Jin Yuan,Sherrinal Patel,Yujuan Wang,Ying Lin,Ming Zhang,Huimin Cai,Daniel Chen,Meixia Zhang,Guiqun Cao,Guiqun Cao,Emily Yeh,Danni Lin,Qiao Su,Wenwen Li,George L. Sen,Natalie A. Afshari,Shaochen Chen,Richard L. Maas,Xiang-Dong Fu,Kang Zhang,Yizhi Liu,Hong Ouyang +26 more
TL;DR: Loss of PAX6 converts LSCs to epidermal stem cells, as demonstrated by a switch in the keratin gene expression profile and by the appearance of congenital dermoid tissue.
Journal ArticleDOI
Induction of retinal progenitors and neurons from mammalian Müller glia under defined conditions.
Jack Jiagang Zhao,Hong Ouyang,Jing Luo,Jing Luo,Sherrina Patel,Yuanchao Xue,John Quach,Nicole Sfeir,Meixia Zhang,Xiang-Dong Fu,Sheng Ding,Shaochen Chen,Kang Zhang,Kang Zhang +13 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that mouse Müller glia cells have the capacity to be reprogrammed into the retinal neuronal cell fate and are competent to give rise to photoreceptors under a defined culture condition and the feasibility of using Müllers glia as a potential source for retinal repair and regeneration is demonstrated.
