A large genome-wide association study of age-related macular degeneration highlights contributions of rare and common variants

Lars G. Fritsche, +185 more
- 01 Feb 2016 -
TL;DR: The results support the hypothesis that rare coding variants can pinpoint causal genes within known genetic loci and illustrate that applying the approach systematically to detect new loci requires extremely large sample sizes.
Journal ArticleDOI

Direct Conversion of Fibroblasts to Neurons by Reprogramming PTB-Regulated microRNA Circuits

TL;DR: It is reported that repression of a single RNA binding polypyrimidine-tract-binding protein is sufficient to induce trans-differentiation of fibroblasts into functional neurons and has a previously undocumented function in the regulation of microRNA functions, suppressing or enhancing microRNA targeting by competitive binding on target mRNA or altering local RNA secondary structure.
Journal ArticleDOI

Caspase-8 promotes NLRP1/NLRP3 inflammasome activation and IL-1β production in acute glaucoma

TL;DR: This study demonstrates the critical role of caspase-8 in IOP-induced cell death in rodent models of acute glaucoma and identifies a mechanism of retinal retinal ganglion cell death and provides a previously unidentified treatment strategy to preserve vision in acute glAUcoma.
