Journal ArticleDOI

Nevirapine pharmacokinetics and risk of rash and hepatitis among HIV-infected sub-Saharan African women.

TL;DR: In this study, HIV-infected African women starting a NVP-based antiretroviral regimen had a lower NVP clearance compared to previous reports, and baseline CD4 cell count at least 250 cells/&mgr;l was significantly associated with NVP toxicity.
Journal ArticleDOI

Predictors and Impact of Patients Lost to Follow-up in a Long-term Randomized Trial of Immediate Versus Deferred Antiretroviral Treatment

TL;DR: Losses to follow-up probably decreased substantially the observed number of primary endpoints, curtailed the power of the trial to demonstrate any difference between immediate and deferred initiation of antiretroviral therapy, and may have introduced large bias in the estimated hazard ratio for the primary endpoint and its statistical significance.
Journal ArticleDOI

Challenges in using observational studies to evaluate adverse effects of treatment.

TL;DR: Michael Hughes and Paige Williams discuss the complex questions concerning both the potential confounding of risk associations and the mechanisms by which treatment might cause an adverse effect.
Journal ArticleDOI

Isolating Cultural Choice Patterns in the U.S. Population

TL;DR: Using a hand-crafted clustering technique, Hughes and Peterson as discussed by the authors identified eight patterns of cultural choice in a national survey collected in 1973 and found that the resulting patterns cannot be arranged in hierarchical order by social class, bringing into question the hypothesized association between culture class and social class.
