Global status and conservation potential of reef sharks

M. Aaron MacNeil, +131 more
- 22 Jul 2020 -
TL;DR: The results reveal the profound impact that fishing has had on reef shark populations: no sharks on almost 20% of the surveyed reefs, and shark depletion was strongly related to socio-economic conditions such as the size and proximity of the nearest market, poor governance and the density of the human population.
Journal ArticleDOI

Author Correction: Global status and conservation potential of reef sharks

M. Aaron MacNeil, +131 more
- 27 Aug 2020 -
TL;DR: An Amendment to this paper has been published and can be accessed via a link at the top of the paper.
Journal ArticleDOI

Repeatability of baited remote underwater video station (BRUVS) results within and between seasons.

TL;DR: The results demonstrate that while BRUVS are a reliable and repeatable method for surveying elasmobranchs, care must be taken in the timing of sampling between different regions to ensure that any differences observed are due to inherent differences amongst sampling areas as opposed to seasonal dissimilarities.
Journal ArticleDOI

Widespread diversity deficits of coral reef sharks and rays

Colin A. Simpfendorfer, +148 more
- 16 Jun 2023 -
TL;DR: Shiffman et al. as discussed by the authors found that overfishing is driving resident reef sharks toward extinction, causing diversity deficits in reef elasmobranch (shark and ray) assemblages.
