TL;DR: It is concluded that pelagic sharks have limited spatial refuge from current levels of fishing effort in marine areas beyond national jurisdictions (the high seas), demonstrating an urgent need for conservation and management measures at high-seas hotspots of shark space use.

TL;DR: The results reveal the profound impact that fishing has had on reef shark populations: no sharks on almost 20% of the surveyed reefs, and shark depletion was strongly related to socio-economic conditions such as the size and proximity of the nearest market, poor governance and the density of the human population.
Journal ArticleDOI
Biological effects, conservation potential, and research priorities of shark diving tourism.
Austin J. Gallagher,Austin J. Gallagher,Gabriel M. S. Vianna,Gabriel M. S. Vianna,Yannis P. Papastamatiou,Catherine Macdonald,Tristan L. Guttridge,Neil Hammerschlag +7 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that under the right conditions and if done in a precautionary, responsible manner, shark diving can provide a net conservation benefit for a handful of species.
Journal ArticleDOI
Long‐term natal site‐fidelity by immature lemon sharks (Negaprion brevirostris) at a subtropical island
Demian D. Chapman,Elizabeth A. Babcock,Samuel H. Gruber,Joseph D. DiBattista,Bryan R. Franks,Steven Kessel,Tristan L. Guttridge,Tristan L. Guttridge,Ellen K. Pikitch,Kevin A. Feldheim +9 more
TL;DR: It is shown that many island‐born lemon sharks remain close to their natal area for long periods (years) after leaving the nursery; more than half of the sampled sharks up to 135 cm total length (∼6 years old) were locally born.
Journal ArticleDOI
Environmental DNA reveals tropical shark diversity in contrasting levels of anthropogenic impact
Judith Bakker,Owen S. Wangensteen,Demian D. Chapman,Germain Boussarie,Dayne Buddo,Tristan L. Guttridge,Heidi Hertler,David Mouillot,Laurent Vigliola,Stefano Mariani +9 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that eDNA metabarcoding can be effectively employed to study shark diversity and further developments in this field have the potential to drastically enhance the ability to assess and monitor elusive oceanic predators, and lead to improved conservation strategies.
