Global status and conservation potential of reef sharks

M. Aaron MacNeil, +131 more
- 22 Jul 2020 -
TL;DR: The results reveal the profound impact that fishing has had on reef shark populations: no sharks on almost 20% of the surveyed reefs, and shark depletion was strongly related to socio-economic conditions such as the size and proximity of the nearest market, poor governance and the density of the human population.
Journal ArticleDOI

When sharks are away, rays will play: effects of top predator removal in coral reef ecosystems

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors collected data from Malaysia and Vanuatu under permits from Sabah Parks (JKM/MBS.1000-2/2 Jld.KI/I/2019) and RISTEKDIKTI (SIP/FRP? E5/Dit.
Journal ArticleDOI

Are we underestimating elasmobranch abundances on baited remote underwater video systems (BRUVS) using traditional metrics

TL;DR: A novel method for BRUVS analysis that involves identifying and counting distinct individuals (MaxIND) to quantify the accuracy of MaxN is presented, recommending the use of MaxIND when rare and endangered species are present, in high density populations, and for behavioural analyses.
